Summary/Objective:
The Unit Secretary/Telemetry Technician (USTT), under the direction of the Registered Nurse, monitors the cardiac rhythm of patients, performs clerical duties on the unit, acts as a receptionist, and performs other tasks as assigned.
Essential Functions:

- Perform cardiac monitoring duties under the supervision of the registered nurse
- Communicate relevant information appropriately
- Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation of patient cardiac rhythms
- Perform clerical duties on unit
- Coordinate the flow of selected information within the Med-Surg Unit and between the Med-Surg Unit and other departments of the hospital to ensure efficient communication of patient needs and timely compliance with medical and nursing orders
- Responsible for the processing of all physicians' orders using computer order entry and MARs
- Act as a central resource regarding the procedures used to obtain services for patients
- Assist with ensuring patient and unit safety
- Demonstrate the professionalism necessary to function in the healthcare environment
- Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information
- Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies
- Participate in economical utilization of supplies and ensure that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner
- Remain conscientious in regard to personal hygiene and comply with specific division/unit regulations
- Maintain positive working relationships within the department as well as other departments
- Work in a stressful environment successfully by maintaining composure and professionalism

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment:
The Med Surg Unit consists of work areas and patient rooms that are well-lit and ventilated. May be exposed to communicable diseases. May experience traumatic and stressful situations, including psychiatric, dismembered and deceased patients.
Qualifications
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time. Must have visual acuity and reading ability in order to read and transcribe physician orders and accurately assesses monitor rhythms. Must have ability to maintain vigilance in monitor observation despite numerous distractions. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in a patient’s cardiac rhythm. Must have manual dexterity and skill to write legibly. Must be able to spell. Must have adequate hearing and communication skills in order to communicate with families, visitors, staff, physicians and other health care givers by telephone or in person. Must be able to transport supplies, equipment and request forms to departments located throughout hospital. Must have the ability to remain calm and efficient in emergent patient situations. Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a Full-time/PRN position, allowing the UA to be staffed as needed during any shift.
Travel
No travel is expected for this position.
Required Education, Experience and License
High School Diploma or GED
Completion of a state-approved Monitor Technician course
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
One year experience as Unit Secretary preferred.
Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitive information with empathy
Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)
