Job Title: Carpenter Assistant
Classification: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Senior Director of Physical Plant
Job Summary/Objective: Sweet Briar seeks a person capable of independently performing maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and/or preventive maintenance. This is an entry-level position with the potential for growth. This person will be a member of the carpenter shop and will have primary responsibilities in the carpenter field but will be available to assist other trades.
Position Type/Expected Work Hours: Full Time, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; On-Call work and some weekend work will be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist carpenters in measuring, cutting, shaping and assembling wood or other construction materials according to specifications.
- Prepare and set up tools, equipment and materials needed for each task
- Carry out general labor duties such as lifting heavy materials, moving equipment and cleaning the work area.
- Operate power tools and equipment under the guidance of carpenter, ensuring proper handling and safety protocols
- Assist in installing and repairing structures, fixtures and fittings, including doors, windows, cabinets, trim and locks.
- Maintain and organize tools, equipment and materials ensuring they are in good working condition and readily available.
- Assist with rough and finish carpentry including cabinetwork and sheetrock.
- Perform repairs and patch/paint walls, doors, and trim
- Assist with installing and repair wood, metal, and vinyl doors/windows.
- Hang various items including whiteboards, bulletin boards, banners, and plaques, etc.
- Assist with fabricate/repairs wood and or concrete ramps
- Assist Contractors in locating and gaining access to facilities
- Repairs all types of roofs, roof drains and flashing, cleans and repairs gutters
- Assists other departments with inclement weather clean up
- Creates and maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized work environment including your work vehicle
- Assist in preparation of graduation and other college functions as directed by supervisor
- Responds to On-Call emergencies by assuring prompt resolution to problems
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications: Must have ability or have the ability to learn the following
- Ability to read blueprints and drawings and possess specific knowledge of building construction and maintenance of facilities
- Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment such as forklift, drills, saws
- Must have basic mathematical skills plus good oral and written communication skills
- Must have a valid VA driver license or ability to get one and be approved by our insurance company to drive our vehicles.
- Strong work ethic and reliability with the ability to show up on time and complete tasks assigned
- Must have a high school diploma or GED completion
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an educational setting
- Previous experience in construction or carpentry related role is preferred
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced and often changing
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without supervision
- Both indoor and outdoor environments in varying types of weather
Physical Demands:
- Ability to walk a large, rural campus
- Ability to lift 80 lbs.
- Ability to work from a ladder
Travel:
- Occasional town trips to pick up needed supplies
