The Head-Rig Sawyer is a critical individual on the saw-line and sets the pace for the entire mill. This position must provide leadership and communicate effectively with all hourly employees. We are looking for an experienced Sawyer with 3-5 years minimum experience operating a six (6) foot bandsaw.
The preferred candidates will be motivated, positive and energetic and be a proven leader. The preferred candidate will also have demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, written instructions, ability to add, subtract (two-digit numbers) and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
The physical demands of the job include, but are not limited to :
CONTINUOUS use of hands to fingers, hearing to understand and respond to various equipment, process alarms, radio messages, etc. You will also work in cold and hot temperatures. SPECIFIC vision needed include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focused.
RESPONSIBILTIES :
Performs duties as assigned, complies with all safety regulations and practices and follows specific directions. The tasks associated with this position include but are not limited to :
- Operates hand rig, log carriage, and conveyor system to saw logs into cants and / or boards.
- Activities log turners to turn log, scans log to determine best approach for trimming and cutting.
- Operates infeed deck to load loader.
- Scans exposed face of log after cut to determine grade and size of next cut.
- Operates mechanical log turner that turns the log over on the carriage for subsequent cuts.
- Assists with changing saws.
- Communicates with Log Line, Gang and Edger operators.
- Keeps work area clean.
- Perform oiling on critical points and other routine maintenance.
- Perform startups, shut downs, inspection, repair, etc.
- Troubleshoot and solve problems.
- Respond to various equipment sounds, process alarms, etc.
- Proficient in sawing Pine and other species of wood.
- Skilled at grading lumber during the cutting process.
- Capable and willing to work independently, self-motivated.
- Willingness to cross-strain on other saws.
- Works in other areas as instructed.
