What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Structural Engineer position at Switchgear Power Systems?
Oversee weldment drawing standards and general drafting best practices for our different product lines.
Key Job Duties:
- Direct others in the production of design documents for metal buildings and other structures that meet drawing standards and any relevant building codes or standards.
- Check and set weldment drawing standards and drafting best practices for our different product lines.
- Coordinate manufacturing weldment design reviews as necessary for new products or designs.
- Ensure manufacturability of weldments produced in-house and outsourced.
- This job could evolve into helping on building code compliance and energy code designs for our metal buildings including production of all required documentation.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to apply problem solving skills to investigate and resolve design issues effectively.
- Technical documentation and report writing skills.
- Extensive welding symbol knowledge and proper usage including the ability to train others.
- Strong drafting practices with the ability to check and markup other people’s weldment drawings.
- Excellent time management skills, self-motivated, and flexible to work well in a fast-paced team environment as job duties can differ significantly from day to day.
- Must have a good understanding of construction documents, including both drawings and technical specifications.
- Provide code compliance help and documentation on prefabricated metal electrical control buildings and other structures. Ensure structures are durable and safe to suit their intended purpose.
Desired Qualities and Attributes:
- PE licensed or willingness to obtain preferred, but not required.
- Assist the QA department on building, part, and welding inspections and any third-party inspections as needed.
- Structural design engineering background with some Finite element analysis experience preferred.
- Heavy welding and/or sheet metal fabrication experience preferred.
- Knowledgeable or willingness to learn U.S. building and energy codes and standards including AWS, ASHRAE 90.1, IEEC, IBC, ASCE 7 & 8, AISC 360, and AISI S100.
- Extensive drafting and drawing experience.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, or mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in structural design, welding and code compliance with 3 years of experience preferred; entry level candidates may be considered for the right applicant. Salary will depend on experience.
