What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School Guidance Counselor position at Switzerland County School Corporation?
SUMMARY: To provide a comprehensive counseling program for students and specifically provide activities to meet the needs of their assigned caseload; consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other educational programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Others duties may be assigned.
- Counsels groups or individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
- Assists students to make appropriate decisions regarding class choices.
- Issues work permits to students.
- Counsels small groups and individual students with problems; refers severe problems to appropriate community resources.
- Consults with teachers, staff; and parents regarding meeting the development needs of students.
- Evaluates and revises the building counseling program.

- Provides consulting services to administrators, teachers, and/or parents about assigned students.
- Makes recommendations and provides information for educational and career placement.
- Strives for harmonious and cooperative relationships with staff, students, and parents.
- Encourages community participation and maintains contacts in the community.
- Learns of new developments in guidance and counseling to improve skills on a regular basis.
- Participates in the guidance program development, maintenance, and enhancement.

- Processes new transcripts for students.
- Supplies brochures, college catalogs, applications for admission, and financial aid information to students.
- Assumes responsibility for writing college recommendations and completing the high school transcript on college applications.
- Assists the Principal in scheduling classes and students.
- Works with the students regarding schedule changes with help from Principal and Assistant Principal when needed.
- Provides input into curriculum revisions.
- Assists teachers with computerized class rosters when needed.
- Makes sure that grade cards are in to office and computer on time.
- Requests records for incoming students and inputs transcript information in the computer.
- Acts as a liaison between special services personnel and the school.

- Works with English and Math Departments on ECA testing guideline requirements, schedules, recommendations for remediation and testing groups.
- Works with English and Math Departments on interpreting ECA results and proper student placement and master course selections.
- Works with Ivy Tech on dual credit opportunities, scheduling of classes, scheduling of exams, reporting dual credits and advising students.
- Schedules students in their appropriate classes.
- Works with Community Foundation of Switzerland County on scheduling College
- Cost Estimator workshops with Dave Murray and Associates, scholarship nights, and college visit planning.
- Remains free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment with the Corporation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Master of Arts degree in counseling, counselor endorsement.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administrators, parents, and the general public.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
