JOB TITLE: Health Information Technician

SUMMARY:
The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician is responsible for loading all documents related to patient into the EMR system, while monitoring patient medical records to ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines and quality initiatives. This position will require the utilization of established processes to store, retrieve, abstract, analyze, encode process, transcribe and release patient information. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with superior organization skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced clinical environment. The willingness to follow training, set instructions and protocols in order to comply with federal and state legal requirements and regular daily attendance in order to meet legal deadlines. Health Information Technician will performed in accordance with federal, state and local guidelines and regulation, and HIPAA, under the direction of the Site Operations Manager.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate required.
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred
- 2 years’ experience in a busy medical office, clinic, or hospital setting preferred
- Experience with EMR/EHR preferred.
- Must be proficient, knowledgeable and understand Microsoft Office, EHR, medical terminology, HIPPA laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines governing the maintenance and release of protected information.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, Basic understanding of the contents of a medical chart, Medicare and Medicaid population, regulations and guidelines, Knowledge of ICD 10 and CPT codes
- Must present a professional and positive demeanor and appearance.
- Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality, customer service and community relations in representing the organization.
- Provide optimal customer service and patient care, while utilizing AIDET service principles in all encounters
- Employ correct grammatical English and write legibly in order to complete appropriate paper work

- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute task under pressure.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Scan all documents related to patient files that are received via, fax, scan, or mail into EMR system.
- Obtain and organize patient records when requested by physician.
- Prepare and release records to requesting parties.
- Assist patients with completion of release of information request.
- Answer phone inquiries from patients and physician offices regarding medical records.
- Process payments for medical records via online payment system.
- Process and sort internal and external mail.
- Attend and actively participate in all department, team and/or committee meetings.
- Assist Lead Health Information Technician with training all incoming Health Information staff.
- Responsible for records preparation for law firms, insurance companies, government agencies and VIP.
- Process medical records requests from both paper and electronic formats, into both paper and electronic formats as specified. This includes subpoenas and other legal requests.
- Responsible for assuring that outside entities contracted for records destruction are destroying records on site.
- Adhere to the purging cycle for clinical records, assuring that records maintained for proper timeframe according to the policy.
- Assist with face-to-face interaction with medical personnel during onsite facility visits.
- Function as a reliable resource for staff and patients for all SWLA sites.
- Pay attention to detail in regards to all aspects of job requirements
- Other duties assigned by Lead and/or Site Ops Manager.
