General Job Description:

The Child Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for the planning, organizing, supervising and controlling the kitchen duties and staff at their assigned location(s) on a daily basis.  This person will supervise the overall preparation and serving of food necessary to establish a well-organized food service operation with the support of the Child Nutrition and Wellness Director, Secretary and the building Principal and CNS staff.  While this job description is intended to be an accurate reflection of the job requirements, management reserves the right to modify and assign duties as deemed necessary.

 

Job Qualifications:

  1. Successful experience in a supervisory position, or showed skills that would signify success in a supervisory position.

  2. 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  3. Valid driver’s license.

  4. Be clean and neat with good personal hygiene and appropriate dress.

  5. Professionalism in dealing with students, staff, teachers, parents and administration in the district and while in the community.

  6. Must work independently and cooperatively with other employees, students and the public.

  7. Must possess adequate technology skills including but not limited to use of spreadsheet and word processing software, printing, emailing and faxing.

  8. Possession of a valid Level II Food Handler Certification is preferred, but ability to pass the Food Handler Certificate exam required within 180 days of employment.  School Nutrition Certification is preferred.

  9. Must be literate and able to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively.

  10. Working knowledge of kitchen equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions without recklessness.

  11. Must be able to follow instructions and be accountable for following policies in accordance with National School Lunch Program regulations, State of Ohio regulations and District regulations.

  12. Experience working in mass food production necessary, school food service experience recommended.

  13. Must be accountable for staff duties getting accomplished in a timely manner, be able to delegate, lead and train staff in a positive manner.

  14. Able to lift 50# maximum and perform repetitive hand motions as well as work on feet for long periods of time.

  15. Possess organizational and problem solving skills.



 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties being assigned by Child Nutrition and Wellness Director)

  • Orders food and supplies according to menu and menu directions on appropriate order forms on order days in a timely manner.

  • Receives, verifies and stocks all food and supplies keeping a monthly and yearly inventory of all goods.

  • Report equipment malfunctions or need for service and recommend contingency plans for use during times of equipment failure.

  • Prepare food for menus, special functions and catering events meeting standards for quality, freshness, appearance and taste.

  • Ensures proper handling of food and sanitation throughout meal preparation, time of service and during cooling procedures, documenting temperatures and corrective measures in accordance with HACCP.

  • Oversees payroll attendance sheets and submits applicable paperwork to Child Nutrition Secretary.

  • Oversees and coordinates substitute workers providing adequate training to substitutes as necessary.

  • Forecast food needs for daily production and weekly ordering.

  • Completes daily production record for each meal served.

  • Assumes responsibility of maintaining up to date knowledge of technology utilized by the district.

  • Manages work schedule for staff, adjusting as needed.

  • Ability to operate cash register or oversee cashier as needed, keeping proper records of CN6, CN7, daily reconciliation, and bank deposits as necessary.  Implement procedures in ensure accountability of funds received.

  • Responsible for locking of kitchen and equipment nightly and unlocking for daily use.

  • Offers suggestions to CNS Director for menus, catering, specials and areas of concern.

  • Supervises any staff in kitchen during time of work.

  • Prepares food according to planned menus, following standardized recipes and menu directions and ensures food is in accordance with pre-determined portions.

  • Responsible for reporting injuries, ordering issues, equipment failure, technology problems, staff problems, etc. to CNS  Director or Secretary in a timely manner.

  • Establishes job tasks for all staff ensuring staff safety, even workload, and proper training per assignment.

  • Ensures proper utilization of food and prevention of waste or pilferage.

  • Maintains file of material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals used in the kitchen.

  • Enforce Health Department regulations and policies/procedures as directed by administrative and Board policy; ensuring that kitchen areas, equipment and counters are cleaned and sanitized, and utilization of the three-compartment sink/dishwasher all meet Health Department standards.

  • Coordinate with building principal regarding operation of the cafeteria in accordance with their needs, special events, and problematic areas.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information including free and reduced meal program applications and  participation.

  • Attend Supervisory meetings as well as additional training opportunities, including but not limited to those offered by the School Nutrition Association.

  • Collaboration with dietary students, interns and visitors to assist with their learning of the school meal programs and tasks associated with being a CNS Supervisor.

  • Willingness to participate in building-led Green and Wellness initiatives as needed.

  • Sites that have a larger number of employees and/or student population may have additional duties and responsibilities.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities for Supervisors responsible for more than 1 site:

  • Accountability in ensuring both sites have proper staff, supplies and training to complete all necessary tasks when not under direct supervision.

  • Ability to work with several building administrators, different regulations and various personalities and make the program successful for all sites.

  • Time management to ensure proper on-time ordering is completed for all sites, at times requiring the supervisor to be flexible in a daily schedule, transferring food/supplies in their personal vehicle and working additional days that are non-contracted days.

  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

  • Promote good public relations with attitude, appearance and conversation.

  • Avoid profanity, loud and obscene behavior.

 

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional operation of vehicle to and from place of employment during inclement weather conditions.

  • Extreme hot and cold environments.

  • Possible transfer of product in personal vehicle, or driving to meetings in personal vehicle.

  • Requirement to lift, carry, push and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district's policies and negotiated agreements.  Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year or more supervisory experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, students and administrators.  Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, teachers or members of the school community.  

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration.  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
