What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Maintenance Technician position at Sylvania Township?
SUMMARY:
The mechanic will perform journey level work to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the Sylvania Township fleet and equipment. The position is unionized and is subject to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Performs journey level work by troubleshooting and repairing automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, specialized equipment such as fire pumpers and non-automotive equipment.
· Performs routine scheduled services for Road, Fire and Police fleet equipment
· Performs other duties as assigned by the Service Manager
· Listen and understand descriptions and complaints
· Receive and complete work orders using Fleet Management Software
· Diagnose and recommend repairs using knowledge of equipment, computers, testing devices, technical manuals and other written instructions
· Interpret results of diagnostic devices and provide solutions for repairs.
· Provide snow and ice control assistance during winter months.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM:
· High School Diploma or equivalent
· Minimum of 3 years in mechanical service work
· Current ASE certification in T2, T4-T7, A1, A4 and A5
· Valid Class A CDL
· Tanker Endorsement (ability to obtain w/in 6 months of hire)
· Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-1 within 9 months.
DESIRED
· 5 years’ experience in mechanical service work
· Valid Class A CDL w/tanker endorsement
· Current ASE Master Certifications in T-Series, A-Series and E-Series
· Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) level 1 in F and E series
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
· Understand design and function of two- and four-cycle internal combustion engines and diesel engines.
· Diagnose and repair systems to include but not limited to ABS, steering suspension, electrical, cooling, lubrication, air conditioning, hydraulics and fuel on various equipment.
· Possess basic welding skills
· Maintain ASE Certifications
· Maintain class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement
· Acetylene torch operations
· Define problems and draw valid conclusions.
· Oral and written communication
· Tact and courtesy when interacting with the public, vendors, suppliers and staff.
· Operate all software programs necessary to meet the needs of Sylvania Township and the Road & Service department
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
· Work is performed under the direct supervision of Service Manager. Must be a self-starter and work independently with little direct supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Moving and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds
· Full-Service Shop with exposure to fumes, dust, moderate noise, petroleum-based products
· Occasional inclement weather work such as: cold, heat, rain, wind, snow and humidity
· Standing for long periods of time
· Grasp, reach with hands, arms, bending reaching, stooping.
· Push, pull, twist, kneel, squat and work in and under heavy equipment
TOOLS & EQUPMENT USED:
Basic mechanic hand tools, power tools, portable lifting devices, overhead cranes, plasma cutter, welders, torches, generators, compressors, pumps.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Own and maintain personal tools to perform essential job functions. Specialty tools and diagnostic tools are supplied. ANSI certified protective toe boot (allowance provided), smoke and drug free work environment and subject to random testing.
