About the Role
Position Summary
The Research Scientist performs natural synthesis of target Flavor molecules, along with extractions of liquid flavors or botanical matter using liquid solvents, both fractional and short path distillations and enzymatic fermentations in order to generate complex Natural Flavors. Conducts daily activities in a timely manner as required to meet proposed project deadlines as dictated by both in-house and external customers. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment and keeping stock of raw materials, laboratory supplies and solvents. Incumbent should have the ability to interact with Customers face-to-face showing an apt for professionalism.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform natural synthesis of new and novel natural flavor compounds using organic chemistry and available natural flavor raw materials
- Perform extractions on dry botanicals in order to generate complex flavors which can be applied to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage formulations
- Perform both fractional and short path distillations in order to isolate naturally occurring flavor compounds
- Assist in duties which support the in-house production department via the generation of natural flavor products
- Perform general housekeeping and dishwashing duties consistent with maintaining a safe and clean laboratory
- Legibly record and document all production and experiment details in separate laboratory notebooks
- Attend both scheduled department and safety meetings
About You
Knowledge and Experience Requirements:
- Must have a BS degree in Chemistry, Food Science, or other related discipline
- 2 years of professional work experience in research science and/or chemistry and performing extractions and distillations on a regular basis.
- 2 years of professional work experience in the food and flavor industry is desired and will be prioritized.
- Must have experience handling chemicals.
Skills & Abilities:
- Must have knowledge of organic synthesis with familiarity of named reactions.
- Must also have the ability to use both small and large scale laboratory equipment.
- Must be able to perform fractional and rush over distillations while under a vacuum atmosphere.
- Must have familiarity with flavor and fragrance chemicals with a general understanding and knowledge of chemicals and any potential adverse interactions.
- Must have good math skills and computer knowledge of SAP in order to search for or record new formulations.
- Must be comfortable working in a laboratory with proper ventilation conditions of chemicals.
