We are seeking a Senior Relay Setting Engineer who will independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. This candidate should have developmental experience in a similar professional position or equivalent graduate-level education.

This role is open in both our Bryan, TX office and our Denver, CO office.

Responsibilities :

  • Lead multiple relay setting development projects for Transmission, Generation and Distribution
  • Take responsibility for the review and quality control of relay setting transmission, generation, and distribution projects. These include transmission line, bus, transformer, feeder, capacitor, reactor, etc., protection schemes
  • Interact with clients and take a leadership role in varying aspects of the projects
  • Be involved with project site evaluations, preparing engineering scope documents and writing technical equipment specifications as needed
  • Develop and manage relay setting development for SEL, GE, ABB, and other relay manufacturers
  • Develop relay settings for Transmission, Distribution and Generation Systems using microprocessor and electromechanical relays
  • Develop relay settings for transmission protection schemes such as line differential, step distance, POTT, DCB, transformer differential, bus differential, etc.
  • Develop relay settings for generator protection schemes such as generator and step-up transformer differential, and other protection elements such as loss of field, positive and negative sequence overcurrents, etc.
  • Develop relay settings for distribution protection schemes such as feeder settings and coordination with downstream devices such as reclosers and fuses
  • Perform Arc Flash studies for high and medium voltage system in ETAP software
  • Perform proper evaluation of NERC PRC-002, PRC-005, PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC- 025, PRC-027 standards for transmission and generation systems
  • Perform short circuit studies using ASPEN / CAPE / ETAP
  • Perform Wide Area Coordination Studies and work with software automation team to calculate new coordinated relay settings
  • Perform fault analysis of fault records
  • Review project schedules and work with project engineer to ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Properly use the document management system
  • Apply corporate standard engineering practices
  • Mentor and direct junior engineers

Qualifications & skills :

  • Ability to travel, estimated 10%.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or cooperatively in a team environment
  • Very strong computer and business software skills
  • Exceptional organization
  • High attention to detail
  • Education & Experience :

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience in developing settings for transmission, distribution, and generation systems preferred
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience with protection and control design
  • Experience with protective relay applications and industry practices
  • Experience with developing relay settings for SEL-411L, 421, 487E, 487B, 321, electromechanical relays, etc.
  • Experience with ASPEN / CAPE / ETAP software packages
