As part of Syndeo’s regional strategy, Syndeo offers affordable fiber-optic Internet services to underserved and rural communities in northern Illinois. We are hiring fiber optic field technicians to help us expand our fiber network and install fiber Internet services in our customers' homes and businesses.

Syndeo is looking for those that want to learn and grow into a career. We will provide on the job training in several areas to accomplish a successful transition. Syndeo fiber optic field technicians perform some of their work in the homes and businesses of our customers and must be able to present themselves neatly and professionally when at client locations.
Fiber technicians need to be comfortable with elevated aerial work positions using ladders and boom trucks. Field technicians will be trained to terminate, splice, ground, locate, document, and test fiber optic cables and conduit.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operate different types of heavy equipment such as mini-backhoe, vibratory plows, vacuum excavators, 4-wheelers, boring machines, and locators.
- Setup, test, maintain, and repair fiber optic connections.
- Perform cable/fiber testing and splicing.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and major repairs to distribution systems.
- Locate underground utilities.
- Install and configure customer premise equipment.
- Troubleshoot and/or repair minor mechanical issues on all types of equipment.
- Attach trailers of all sizes to vehicles and back them up appropriately.
- Blow and/or pull fiber through all manner and sizes of ducts
- Terminate fiber at the Customer (N)etwork (I)nterface (D)evice (i.e. NID) and in the backbone pedestal located in the utility easement.
- Run aerial fiber from pole to pole as well as from pole to Customer residence.
- Electrically ground installed equipment and weather seal all openings.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues at customer locations.
- Run and terminate Cat5 cables from outdoor equipment to inside demarcation point.
- Align wireless antennas and program customer based routers.
- Respond to trouble tickets within acceptable company timeframe standards.
- Document changes made to fiber optic network
- Update inventory records and keep track of equipment.
- Participate in an afterhours On-Call rotation shift.
Desired Skills:
- Effectively communicate with customers and management.
- Proficient in Basic IT & IP troubleshooting
- Proficient in using a shovel and other manual digging tools.
- Proficient in using all manner of hand tools such as cordless drills, hammer drills, saw zaw, etc.
- Customer Service Experience
- Acute hand-eye coordination
- Patience when working in a complex scenario.
- Willingness to work with others.
- Applicants without experience in fiber optic may apply if there is experience in technical field work. Syndeo will provide all necessary training and equipment to learn to splice and maintain fiber optic connections.
