First-Line Supervisors/Managers of Production and Operating Workers

Job Purpose:
Supervise and coordinate the activities of production and operating workers, such as inspectors, machine operators, assemblers, welding/fabricators, and general laborers.

Essential Duties and/or Responsibilities:
  • Enforce safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Responsible for coaching subordinates in the culture of continuous improvement.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of employees engaged in the production or processing of goods, such assemblers, machine operators, and welding/fabricators.
  • Read and analyze charts, work orders, production schedules, and other records and reports to determine production requirements and to evaluate current production estimates and outputs.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments.
  • Plan and establish work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals.
  • Inspect materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
  • Demonstrate equipment operations and work and safety procedures to new employees or assign employees to experienced workers for training.
  • Observe work and monitor gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure that operators conform to production or processing standards.
  • Confer with management or subordinates to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints, job orders, and company policies and procedures for workers.
  • Maintain operations data, such as time, production, and cost records, and prepare management reports of production results.
  • Recommend or implement measures to motivate employees and to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, or efficiency.
  • Determine standards, budgets, production goals, and rates, based on company policies, equipment and labor availability, and workloads.
  • Requisition materials, supplies, equipment parts, or repair services.
  • Recommend personnel actions such as hirings, promotions and terminations.
  • Required to work weekends as needed.
  • Less than 10% travel as needed, domestic and international.

Experience and Education:
  • H.S. diploma or equivalent required, associate's degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school preferred.
  • Preferred experience in welding/fabrication and CNC machining.
  • Preferred experience managing in the Toyota Production System (TPS).
  • Preferred experience in a union environment.
  • Preferred experience in a job shop environment.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Production and Processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacturing.
  • Management of Personnel Resources - Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work.
  • Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. Ensure that escalation protocol is understood and followed.
  • Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Operation Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Systems Evaluation - Identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
  • Education and Training - Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Management of Material Resources - Obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
