Job Description
The Assistant Director is responsible for major components of the operations of the Academic Affairs office, including curriculum management, collaboration with cross-campus offices such as the University Senate Committee on Curriculum and Provost’s Office of Academic Affairs, course scheduling and accreditation/assessment.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and experience in higher education required. Master’s degree desired.

Responsibilities
CURRICULUM
- Administer curriculum management for all academic programs at the Newhouse School (existing undergraduate, graduate residential, online programs, and proposals for all new programs).
- Oversee curriculum proposal creation by department chairs/directors to comply with university policy/procedures.
- Advise faculty, dept chairs, program directors, curriculum committee on policies/procedures; serve in advisory capacity on curriculum development committees.
- Develop, administer, maintain workflows for curriculum creation/review/submission
- Identify curricular needs/opportunities; strategize curriculum planning in collaboration with Associate Dean.
- Identify, propose, implement new opportunities for cross-campus academic initiatives (e.g. dual degrees, 4 1s).
- Monitor changes in curriculum at other schools/colleges; update curricular materials as needed.
- Determine which changes require further investigation/review; strategize implementation.
- Recommend curriculum design to faculty that aligns with accreditation standards.
- Serve as contact for University Senate Committee on Curriculum, Provost’s Office of Academic Affairs.
- Approve/distribute curriculum review materials for Newhouse faculty.
- Oversee input of information in course catalog.
- Establish/meet School and University deadlines for curriculum planning.
SCHEDULING
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Operations to create course schedules for all academic terms and programs, including classes, times, and spaces.
- Ensure curriculum changes are reflected in draft schedules.
- Meet regularly with crucial stakeholders, including department chairs/program directors/Director of Academic Operations/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, to discuss schedule needs and requests, and propose solutions.
SUPERVISION
- Assign tasks to the Academic Operations Analyst (and Graduate Assistant, if applicable) in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
- Manage, lead and mentor unit staff. Cultivate a respectful, positive work culture that encourages collaboration and new ideas, where all employees feel heard, appreciated, and equally valued.
- Establish clear goals and expectations. Effectively communicate with unit staff to provide regular constructive feedback and opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs on Performance Partnership process to review progress, develop future goals, and identify professional development needs.
- Model excellence by demonstrating professionalism, integrity and ethical behavior at all times. Enforce university and school policies, procedures, and cultural values.
- Identify, encourage, and support opportunities for professional development.
ACCREDITATION & ASSESSMENT
- Supervise collection and analysis of course syllabi.
- Report annual data to accreditor.
- Collaborate with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Assessment and Program Review, and Academic Operations Analyst on accreditation and assessment needs, priorities and timelines.
- Ensure that curriculum proposals and course syllabi conform to assessment and accreditation needs and requirements.
- Oversee responses to data requests from Provost’s Office for Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
