Job Description

The Environmental Health and Safety Technician position supports a variety of technical operations and services for the Environmental Health and Safety department. Key duties of the position include receiving and delivering chemical packages, maintaining the laboratory chemical inventory system, and hazardous materials shipping and disposal. The position also conducts safety equipment inspections, assists in preparing, distributing and communicating safety information, maintains department response and monitoring instruments and equipment, and performs activities to support multiple safety programs administered by the department.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, of biological science, environmental health and safety or a related discipline; Associates degree with relevant experience will be considered.
  • Experience working with chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Experience safety instruments and equipment preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated understanding of chemical hazards, compatibility and safety controls.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and high level of comfort with public speaking.
  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
  • Valid driver’s license – must drive a University vehicle around campus.
  • Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University.

Responsibilities

  • Receive chemicals, record into chemical inventory management system and deliver to laboratories.
  • Prepare and provide hazardous materials safety information and educational materials.
  • Maintain the University laboratory chemical inventory using the University’s chemical tracking software system, prepare inventory reports, ensure safety data sheets are available, and conduct periodic audits of inventory records.
  • Support hazardous materials shipping by confirming regulatory shipping requirements, preparing shipping papers and packages, and coordinating with common carriers.
  • Support hazardous waste management services including collection, characterization, tracking and packaging.
  • Perform activities to support EHSS in administering safety programs with a focus on chemical safety, biosafety, radiation safety, laser safety, and general laboratory safety.
  • Perform safety inspections of chemical fume hoods, eye wash, safety showers, etc., and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Procure, select, and distribute lab coats and coordinate lab coat laundering services.
  • Create and distribute safety signage.
  • Assist with creating and communicating safety information, guidance and trainings.
  • Inventory, inspect and calibrate EHSS instruments, equipment and emergency response supplies.
  • Participate in hazardous material spill and emergency response. This includes ability to use a respirator and protective clothing and specialized instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor and assign task to student workers and interns.
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, and able to handle and maneuver chemical drums, boxes and containers to transport them across campus using carts, dollies and/or University vehicles.
  • Position requires a lot of walking, bending, and lifting.
  • Must be medically fit and able to wear proper PPE including respiratory protection.
