Job Description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in snowmelt detection using satellite remote sensing. This is a fully funded, full-time, 1-year position.

The successful applicant will work closely with team members from Syracuse University, NASA, and the Army Corps of Engineers on a continuing NASA-funded research project that seeks to improve monitoring of snowmelt dynamics via data fusion of active and passive microwave satellite observations.

The position responsibilities include development of the data fusion method and analysis of remote sensing data in multiple environments, as well as preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting research at scientific conferences. Opportunities will be available to participate in snow-related field activities in the northeast U.S. The postdoc will also have an opportunity to help mentor graduate students and may have the opportunity to gain teaching experience.

Prior remote sensing research experience is required, along with strong skills in statistical data analysis and scientific programming (Python, R, Matlab, or similar). Experience with active microwave remote sensing, GIS, data assimilation, spatial statistics, statistical disaggregation/downscaling, and/or data science and machine learning would be considered an asset. Applicants should also have a demonstrated record of research and publication, and hold a PhD in earth & environmental science, cryosphere science, environmental engineering, geography, atmospheric science, applied mathematics, or a related field before starting this position.
