Job Description

The Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab, led by Dr. Susan Parks in the Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, seeks an experienced and highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team. The lab focuses on studying the ecology and evolution of acoustic signaling in marine systems. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in passive acoustic monitoring and/or acoustic signal processing, with a preference for candidates with experience in the deployment and recovery of marine acoustic recording systems. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Researcher will use these skills to assist in the collection and analysis of acoustic data to detect the acoustic presence of North Atlantic right whales from 6 monitoring sites in the NY/NJ Bight region to provide baseline information on seasonal and spatial distribution to aid in the conservation of this species. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be mentored in developing an independent research program to provide the foundation for future independent research careers.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Biology or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Demonstrated potential for excellence in research, evidenced by a solid publication record or significant research accomplishments.

Job Specific Qualifications

Job specific qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Detail-oriented, highly organized in data management.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: passive acoustic monitoring, analysis of large data sets (e.g. implementation of acoustic detectors), using computational tools (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB).

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities Include

  • Assistance with equipment maintenance and field deployments and recovery of acoustic mooring stations for the study.
  • Leading quality control and assurance of the raw data download and archiving of datasets.
  • Leading the acoustic detection analysis for the datasets and providing summaries of the results for inclusion in reports.
  • Drafting manuscripts and publishing findings, presenting at conferences, contributing to new grant applications, mentoring undergraduate/graduate students, and supporting other team members in their research efforts.
