Syracuse Utilities was formed in 1974 and is based in Brewerton, New York with four offices across the

state. For nearly 50 years the community has relied on Syracuse Utilities for a wide range of utility

construction services including aerial line construction, fiber optic placement, sub-station and civil-electric

infrastructure projects, and other civil-infrastructure related services. Syracuse has established

reputation of operational excellence and commitment to safety and reliability. 

Position Summary:  

Syracuse Utilities is seeking an experienced Estimator to join its team. In this role, the individual will

be responsible for preparing estimates utilizing material, labor, and overhead costs, and managing

awarded projects. The ideal candidate will handle multiple concurrent bids, possess expertise in

estimating utility projects, and demonstrate proficiency in project management tools. Regular site

visits to monitor progress, collaboration with field personnel, and managing project profitability are

key aspects of this role. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to safety and customer

satisfaction are integral to a successful Estimator.  

Responsibilities: 

 Project Assessment: Evaluate project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to

understand the scope and requirements of projects. 

 Cost Analysis: Conduct detailed cost analyses, considering materials, labor, equipment,

and other relevant factors to develop accurate project estimates. 

 Bid Preparation: Prepare comprehensive and competitive bids, ensuring alignment with

project requirements and company profitability goals. 

 Collaboration: Work closely with company leadership, project managers, engineers, and

other stakeholders to gather essential information and insights for accurate estimations. 

 Market Research: Stay informed about industry trends, pricing, and technology to maintain

competency in project estimating. 

 Documentation: Maintain accurate and organized documentation of estimates, bid

responses, and related communications. 

 Negotiation Support: Lead or provide support during negotiations with clients and

subcontractors, addressing cost-related inquiries and ensuring alignment with estimates. 

 Relationship Management: Develop and maintain relationships with customers, vendors,

and contractors. 

Qualifications: 

 Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field is preferred. 

 Five years of Estimating experience or project management required. 

 Excellent skills in interpersonal communication and teamwork. 

 Strong computer skills including Excel, Word, Outlook. 

 Strong written and oral communication skills. 

 Ability to work independently and possess a high level of self-motivation, integrity, and

initiative with an ability to meet strict deadlines. 

 Ability to effectively problem solve, prioritize, and follow through on all tasks. 

 Ability to maintain highest levels of confidentiality. 

 Familiarity with safety regulations and industry standards.
