What are the responsibilities and job description for the Radiation Protection Technician position at System One?

System One is hiring Radiation Protection Technicians for Spring Outage Season.  Must have commercial nuclear experience and have been badged within 365 days at a nuclear power plant.
 

The Radiation Protection Technician monitors, evaluates, and controls radiation exposure to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment in compliance with federal, state, and plant-specific safety regulations. This role involves frequent interaction with plant personnel, detailed record-keeping, and operating specialized radiation detection and measurement equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Radiation Monitoring:

  2. Conduct routine and special surveys of plant areas to measure radiation and contamination levels.
  3. Operate, calibrate, and maintain radiation detection instruments.
  4. Exposure Control:

  5. Monitor worker radiation exposure using dosimetry equipment.
  6. Implement ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to minimize radiation exposure.
  7. Establish and enforce radiation protection protocols, including the use of protective equipment.
  8. Regulatory Compliance:

  9. Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, including those from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  10. Maintain accurate records of radiation levels, contamination, and worker exposure.
  11. Training and Communication:

  12. Provide radiation protection training and guidance to plant personnel and contractors.
  13. Communicate risks and safety measures effectively to all levels of staff.
  14. Emergency Response:

  15. Respond to radiation-related emergencies, spills, or contamination events.
  16. Implement decontamination procedures as necessary.
  17. Support Outage and Maintenance Activities:

  18. Provide oversight and radiation monitoring during maintenance and refueling outages.
  19. Assist in planning radiological controls for high-radiation tasks.
  20. Environmental Monitoring:

  21. Collect samples (air, water, soil) to assess the environmental impact of plant operations.
  22. Analyze results and report findings to regulatory agencies as required.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in radiation protection, health physics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in radiation protection and nuclear power.
  • Certifications: Completion of Radiation Protection Technician training; ANSI/ANS 3.1 qualification is desirable.
  • Skills:
  • Proficient in the use of radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to radiation (within regulated safety limits).
  • Work in confined spaces, at heights, or in other challenging environments.
  • Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Extended periods of walking, standing, or wearing protective clothing.
  • Adequate vision and manual dexterity to operate equipment.
