Job Overview
The Patent Foreign Filing Specialist is responsible for preparing and managing patent applications filed internationally, including Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications. This role ensures the accurate and timely filing of patent applications, maintains compliance with international patent laws, and manages communications with attorneys, clients, and foreign associates. The specialist plays a critical role in supporting the patent prosecution process, ensuring all necessary documentation is secured and filed properly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare new patent applications for filing with foreign patent offices, the PCT U.S. Receiving Office, and the International Bureau of WIPO, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Obtain and file necessary documentation such as priority documents, powers of attorney, assignments, and formal drawings, ensuring legalization when required.
- Communicate with attorneys, foreign associates, clients, embassies, the State Department, the USPTO, and the International Bureau of WIPO.
- Draft and process reporting letters to clients, instruction letters to foreign associates, and necessary paperwork during the prosecution of patent applications.
- Review and docket all incoming mail related to foreign patent applications in the department's electronic docket system.
- Monitor and update daily and biweekly foreign dockets, ensuring attorneys and clients are informed of upcoming deadlines.
- Obtain cost estimates for attorneys and clients related to patent filings and maintenance.
- Stay updated on changes in international and foreign patent laws and regulations, utilizing patent reference materials and online resources.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Business school diploma or equivalent experience in intellectual property (IP) foreign patent filing.
- Three (3 ) or more years of recent IP patent PCT and foreign filing experience within a law firm environment.
Special Requirements:
- Knowledge of PCT and foreign patent laws.
- Experience with electronic filing (e-filing) of patent applications.
- Availability to work overtime when needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in docketing software and electronic work environments, including Windows 7, Microsoft Word 2010, Outlook, and document management systems.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with high levels of accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with team members.
- Strong professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
Additional Desired Characteristics:
- Experience using FoundationIP or similar intellectual property management software.
- Ability to quickly adapt to changes in international patent regulations and procedures.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $65,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
