JOB SUMMARY

A Crew Boat Captain is ultimately responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel —‌including its seaworthiness, safety and security, cargo operations, navigation, crew management, and legal compliance‍—‌and for the persons and cargo on board. The captain is therefore responsible for the safe and economical operation of the vessel. A captain is expected to possess managerial and leadership skills in addition to competence in navigation, seamanship and vessel operations. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License 
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate 
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) – Minimum endorsement of 100 GRT, Near Coastal 
  • First Aid & CPR
  • TWIC Card
  • Minimum of three years’ experience

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Captain is responsible for the safe navigation and piloting of the vessel.
  • Management and Supervision of crew and passengers.
  • Protection of the environment.
  • Protection of cargo or property of the charterer.
  • Bridge administration/paperwork.
  • Ensure the crew is properly trained to perform their duties.
  • Monitor cargo transfer during critical times when necessary.
  • Be a liaison between the vessel and the dock personnel.
  • Serve as an Emergency Response Manager for the boat during any emergency situations.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed by vessel crew.
  • Update vessel crew on new or revised policies and procedures when necessary.

SHIFT INFORMATION

The standard work schedule for a Captain is 14 days on the vessel/barge and 7 days off, however this work schedule may vary. The daily work is for a 12-hour shift. 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Hearing: All pilothouse personnel are required to communicate with other vessels, Coast Guard stations, Corps of Engineers, lockmasters, and their own crewmembers. Communications may be made via a VHF radio, orally, by sound signals or by hand signals. All pilothouse personnel must have hearing that allows them to communicate effectively in the conditions that might be encountered aboard a towboat.

Vision: Pilothouse personnel must have vision that allows them to safely operate the vessel in situations that are likely to occur when a boat is in navigation, night and day, year round. They must have color vision that enables them to identify navigation lights, signals, and symbols, as well as warning lights or symbols. Their depth perception must be adequate for navigation in close quarters, including lock or bridge approaches.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
