JOB SUMMARY
The Welder Helper primarily assists skilled welders by performing tasks like preparing work areas, supplying materials and tools, holding pieces during welding, cleaning up after welding, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed, essentially supporting the welder to complete their work efficiently; they may also perform basic metal cutting and grinding tasks as needed, often working under the supervision of a lead welder.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Prior experience or schooling preferred.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of metalworking principles.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Physical strength and dexterity to handle heavy materials and tools.
- Good hand-eye coordination.
- Willingness to learn welding techniques and safety procedures.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists welders in the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of metal structures and equipment.
- Clean and maintain welding equipment and work area.
- Loading and unloading materials, transporting metal pieces to the welding station, and ensuring proper stock levels.
- Holding metal pieces in place during welding, adjusting welding machine settings as directed, and managing the flow of welding materials.
- Performing basic cutting and grinding tasks to prepare materials for welding.
- Interpreting basic blueprints and work instructions to understand project requirements.
- Adhering to safety procedures, wearing proper protective gear, and identifying potential hazards. Maintain a clean and organized work area, always adhering to safety protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SHIFT INFORMATION
The standard work schedule for a Welder is Monday – Friday 7:00am to 3:45 pm with a 45-minute lunch break. May be required to work extended (> 8 hour) time periods and/or travel occasionally.

This position works in a non-climate-controlled shop setting, with outdoor exposure during the workday. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy.
