About Tacoma Boat Builders:

Tacoma Boat Builders (TBB) is a non-profit organization dedicated to positive youth development through mentorship and hands-on learning programs for marginalized and underserved youth. Our central activities use woodworking and on-the-water experiences to facilitate youth learning. We pair young individuals with experienced craftspeople who then create objects of functional beauty together.

Position Summary:

Tacoma Boat Builders is seeking a passionate and dedicated Youth Program Facilitator on a part-time basis to join our program team. The focus of this role will be to support our summer time programming which will consist heavily of on-the-water activities as well as woodworking projects in the shop. The Program Facilitator will play a key role in delivering engaging and impactful programming, fostering the growth and development of young individuals in a unique and dynamic learning environment.

The hours for this position will vary and may increase during peak times, requiring flexibility and adaptability to meet the demands of the workload. On average the position will offer approximately 2o hours per week with the possibility of being more dependent on organizations needs. People with lived experience within or around the criminal justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.

TBB’s Summer Schedule at a Glance (Can be flexible):

Monday, Friday- Community Boating Program

Typical shift: 11:00 am - 4:30 pm

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday- Core Programs

Typical shift: 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Program Facilitator:

Program Implementation:

• Facilitate on-the-water and woodshop activities for youth participants, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
• Execute age-appropriate curriculum in collaboration with the Youth Program Manager and other team members.
• Implement TBB's trauma-informed approach to support the diverse needs of participants.

On-the-water Programs:

• Have or be willing to obtain boaters safety license.
• Be willing to row/sail/paddle with youth and their families as needed.

Youth Engagement:

• Build positive relationships with youth participants, creating an environment that promotes personal growth, teamwork, and leadership skills.
• Foster a sense of community and belonging among program participants.
• Collaborate with the Youth Engagement team to develop strategies for effectively engaging and empowering young individuals.

Transportation:

• Drive or ride along in TBB’s 15 passenger van to pick up and drop off youth participants for weekly programs and field trips.

Evaluation and Reporting:

• Support monitoring and evaluation of program effectiveness, providing input for continuous improvement.
• Support collection of information to maintain accurate records of participant progress, achievements, and feedback.

Collaborative Teamwork:

• Work collaboratively with other staff to create a cohesive and supportive team environment.
• Participate in regular team meetings as needed to share insights, assist in coordination of activities, and contribute to the overall success of TBB's programs.
• Contribute to maintaining cleanliness in communal spaces such as the shop and office area on a weekly basis.

Qualifications:

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of youth through hands-on maritime experiences, making a lasting impact on the community served by Tacoma Boat Builders.

• Interest or experience in youth development, marine sciences, social work, or other related field.
• Experience working with youth in a programmatic setting, preferably in an experiential learning environment.
• Ability to work with tools or another form of creative expression such as painting or drawing, and a willingness to learn new skills.
• Comfortable using small to medium sized watercraft for rowing, paddling, and sailing or a willingness to learn these skills.
• Passion for TBB's mission and commitment to creating positive and inclusive spaces for youth.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with youth and build meaningful relationships.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and coordinate program activities effectively.
• Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the evolving needs of the program and organization.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and a commitment to creating a safe and supportive space for all participants.

Work Environment:

The work environment for this position is richly varied, spanning across multiple settings that include offices, workshops, dockyards, boats, and occasional off site visits in various conditions.

Physical Requirements:

The nature of this work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. The job entails a varied work environment which could include climbing stairs, walking on uneven terrain, walking up and down ramps, and walking on floating docks. The role requires an ability to get in/out of small watercraft (i.e. canoes, row boats, sailboats, long boats) from a floating dock. Ability to lift 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Ability to interpret, evaluate and communicate detailed written or verbal instructions to others accurately and quickly, including answering phones, attending meetings, written correspondence or other forms of communication.
