Job Description:
Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Baseball Information, you’ll learn the skills crucial to leading a media relations department in professional sports. A well-above average writer, someone who follows baseball on an everyday basis and who is extremely detail-oriented is the right fit for this internship, which is open to undergraduates and for college credit only.
Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Baseball Information, you’ll learn the skills crucial to leading a media relations department in professional sports. Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in compiling, editing and distributing daily game notes, stat packs, box scores and other press box materials to broadcast teams and other media.
· Assist in overseeing the press box during home games and special events.
· Act as a liaison between the Tacoma Rainiers and media; assisting with and monitoring player and coaching staff interviews.
· Assist in writing and editing game stories and press releases, as well as other editorial items for team website and team publications.
· Assist in producing annual Tacoma Rainiers baseball card set (statistical information, photo selection, proofing).
· Update in-game Tacoma Rainiers social media with lineup and score updates, using Adobe-created graphics.
· Write Tacoma Rainiers game recaps/post-game notes for dissemination both online for fans and to local/baseball media.
· Learn how to update and add to Tacoma Rainiers website, with possible coverage of occasional road games.
· Help oversee issues of scheduling game-day press box staff.
· Please note: this is not a broadcasting position
Requirements:
· Must be able to receive college credit for internship from an accredited university or college (this is a non-paid position).
· A roughly May to August availability will be accepted, considering academic calendars. Candidates available on-site in Tacoma by late March/early April or available the month of September should indicate that in their cover letter. ALL candidates will be carefully reviewed and considered; quality writing samples will be the most significant aspect in selecting the right candidate(s). Previous collegiate sports information experience is a definite plus.
· Significant interest in a career in media relations and/or sports information is essential; basic understanding of professional/Minor League Baseball is a must, a passionate baseball fan and follower is a huge plus.
· Proficient or working knowledge in MS Word, Excel, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is a plus. Basic Adobe skills are a huge plus – however there will be time to train the right candidate on daily software needs.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Professionalism around pro athletes, visiting celebrities and other high-profile individuals- bring a fan’s passion to the ballpark every day while understanding the line between fan and front office.
· Ability to fill hours on nights, weekends and holidays during the baseball season. In general, the internship will be between 15 and 30 hours a week depending on when the team is home. Occasional, minimal hours when the team is on the road, at the intern’s discretion. The schedule will be flexible. There will always be additional opportunities during road games and during business hours for a baseball-loving intern to be involved in multiple facets of the communications operation to gain relevant career experience.
