JOB SUMMARY
The position of Shop Manager is expected to oversee and participate in the day to day operations of their assigned railcar cleaning field location. He or she will demonstrate excellent leadership in driving safe work practices, training employees in processes and procedures, maintaining compliance to company, customer and federal regulations, serving as the first point of contact for local customers and running a profitable operation for their location. Their expertise will be put to practice to solve problems and execute business and personal objectives.
The Shop Manager is responsible for informing the Director of Operations of issues related to their assigned duties.
DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary by manager. DUTIES:
- Full responsibility and oversight of a railcar cleaning location with SAFETY and ENVIRONMENT being the highest priorities next to financial stewardship.
- Assure employees and overall shop location adheres to the Company’s Health and Safety Program.
- Coach, mentor, motivate and lead a multitude of direct employees from various backgrounds in their day to day job duties.
- Oversee directly, and through subordinates that safety, environmental, housekeeping, equipment, and quality standards are maintained.
- Assure proper railcar cleaning in accordance with company, customer, and industry standards.
- Adhere to production deadlines and schedules by monitoring work and scheduling employees.
- Assure all operational documents are completed, accurate and on time to include, but not limited to daily reports, estimates, and QA/QC documents.
- Coordinate with local switch crew to ensure the switching of railcars are completed accurately and efficiently.
- Evaluate production and control labor costs and supply expenses.
- Monitor inventory levels and work in conjunction with the vendors to ensure maintaining of proper inventory control in an effort to avoid production delays due to material as well as waste due to excess inventory.
- Perform interviews, performance reviews, performance improvement plans and corrective discipline for current and prospective shop employees.
- Properly anticipate future challenges (i.e. upcoming vacations, holidays, equipment PM’s, weather conditions, etc.) in conjunction with workload requirements.
- Responsible for ensuring timecards are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
- Make recommendations to the Director of Operations and COO concerning the shop with the intention of resulting in continual process improvements while maintaining established safety and quality standards.
REQUIREMENTS
- The ability to communicate professionally and clearly in writing as well as orally both in public and over the phone is required.
- Strong Organizational and leadership skills for a multifaceted work environment.
- Detail oriented and customer focused.
- Be able to operate a computer to perform daily work activities, with an understanding of basic computer software (MS Word, MS Excel) and the ability to grasp new software within reasonable time frames.
- Attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
- The ability to problem solve and troubleshoot operational problems.
- The ability to manage company assets including but not limited to inventory, fuel, company accounts, tools and human resources with an integrity that is beyond reproach.
- Ability to climb ladders, tolerate confined spaces and heights, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability and willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
- Willingness and ability to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hats.
- Ability to pass a company required physical examination.
- Have a valid driver’s license.
- Availability to travel up to 50% any given month, as business dictates.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
An Bachelor’s Degree from a college or technical school is preferred, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
A minimum of 5 years of proven successful experience in a freight car/tank car experience is preferred, or a combination of education and experience is required.
A minimum of 5 years of a prior leadership position with subordinates reporting to them is required.
