Position Description: Sixth Grade Crew Leader and Teacher

Job Description: TEA is hiring a full-time middle school educator who can engagingly teach three to four sections of sixth grade core courses and serve as crew leader to a class of 20-24 students. Applicants with extensive experience teaching middle school language arts, science, math and social studies will be most competitive.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and deliver high-quality lessons and units in line with curricula of the school with the aim of addressing the varied learning needs of individual students and educating the whole child.


  • Teach sixth grade courses in a project-based, engaging manner

  • Work across and among grade bands to integrate lower and upper school curriculum effectively into our school-wide scope and sequence.

  • Serve as a grade-level CREW leader responsible for knowing students well, developing and actuating CREW meetings on a weekly basis.

  • Organize and carry out grade-level fieldwork and project-based studies, spending 10-15 nights in the field per school year.

  • Create and deliver curriculum consistent with the schools’ mission.

  • Employ varied approaches to support student progress on an ongoing basis.

  • Provide formative and summative feedback on progress to students and parents in a timely manner.

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation regarding student skills, progress, and knowledge in accordance with school-established guidelines.

  • Follow-up on parent communications within 24 hours.

  • Provide updates to parents to communicate progress on students’ learning and social-emotional growth.

  • Take on other duties such as recess and lunch supervision.

  • Learn, maintain and enforce policies around course content, attendance, behavior, learning support, assessment and TEA’s DEIB model.

  • Incorporate hands-on learning experiences to augment and support classroom learning.

Goals: As an integral part of the upper school team, the teacher supports student work and performance, collaborates with the learning support team, administration and upper school division head on related matters, participates in project instruction, co-plans and co-executes fieldwork that integrates TEA’s pillars, and communicates with parents regarding student progress, projects, and fieldwork.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students
  • Lead or co-lead 10-15 days of backcountry or frontcountry fieldwork throughout the year

community in alignment with the school’s DEIB beliefs

  • Demonstrate respect towards all members of the school community, including
students, parents, teachers, support staff, and administration
  • Behave with dignity and respect, in accordance with school and community expectations
  • Abide by school policies and procedures as outlined in the Faculty Handbook

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or related subject
  • Broad knowledge of, and a passion for, the subject to be taught
  • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the schools
  • Strong teaching ability with a clear enjoyment of working with children and outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking in English, including excellent verbal and written skills
  • Ability to work well with students and colleagues and a willingness to be an

active, enthusiastic member of the CommuniTEA

  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Willingness and ability to work in a demanding environment dealing with a wide
variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
  • Work primarily in outside weather conditions consistent with Lake Tahoe
