Summary
Serves as the primary point of contact for the community calling the District for a questions about benefits and estimate requests. Answers calls from the hospital’s main telephone numbers and calls routed from the physician offices and departments for scheduling. Identifies self-pay patients and generates estimates for primary care visits and specialist consults, diagnostic imaging and other hospital or clinic related series as assigned. Identifies out of network coverage and generates estimates for primary care visits and specialist consults, diagnostic imaging and other hospital or clinic related series as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Creates financial estimates for every outpatient service scheduled.
- Completes outbound and inbound calls to patients to communicate estimates for self-pay and out of network scheduled services.
- Serves as the first point of contact for insurance contract and coverage questions.
- Maintains effective communication with hospital staff, physicians, physician’s offices, patient and/or families, insurance companies, and appropriate vendors.
- Utilizes computer system and its features.
- Utilizes call software to answer all incoming calls to hospital billing number.
- Assists patients with questions regarding insurance, billing, balances, and pricing.
- Maintains positive and can-do attitude in all interactions.
- Documents all patient interactions into Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Takes patient payments and applies to appropriate accounts.
- Assists patient in setting up MyChart account.
- Assists with training of staff as needed.
- Completes quality checks as assigned.
- Utilizes interpreter’s services as needed.
- Verifies and routes e-mails to appropriate area from information message system.
- Sets up patient accounts on payment plans and sends letters to patients.
- Screens and refers patients to Financial Counseling as needed.
- Attends and participates in department approved training.
- Understands, supports, promotes, and adheres to the customer service philosophy and standards of the Tahoe Forest Hospital District.
- Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
- Complies with System policies and procedures.
- Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
No educational requirement and 6 months to 1 year relevant experience
Required Licenses/Certifications
National Association of Healthcare Access (NAHAM): Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) - Within 6 months of hire into job
Other Experience/Qualifications
Required
- Strong aptitude with Microsoft Access is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Insurance benefits and ability articulate to patient/family.
Preferred
- Bilingual
- Associate's degree (A.A) or Bachelor of Arts Degree in a related field
- NAHAM Certification CHAA, taken with in 3 months and passed not later that 6 months.
