Summary
Utilizes the nursing process to coordinate and plan quality care for surgical clients of all age groups undergoing surgical procedures. Coordinates the pre-admission process in collaboration with Physician’s offices, Patient Registration Department, Anesthesia, and Surgical Services Departments. Coordinates healthcare services for patients in need of additional education or resources for the management of their disease in advance of an impending procedure. Coordinates educational resources, provider orders and ensures proper testing, labs, imaging, and medical records are completed and results are available prior to scheduled procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assesses physical and psychosocial needs of patients.
- Assists patients through the healthcare system and coordinates peri-operative needs with all internal and external stakeholders, including primary and specialty care teams, operating room staff, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, and the patient/ patient's representatives.
- Works directly with peri-operative provider team to achieve a standardized, best practice and outcomes-based approach to patients and their perioperative needs, including management of patients with multiple co-morbidities or high risk for readmission to a hospital setting.
- Coordinates continuity of patient care with internal and external healthcare providers, including the patient's primary care physician.
- Coordinates continuity of patient care with patients, their family, and primary care physician following hospital admission, discharge, and follow up calls.
- Facilitates patient medication management under the guidance of Anesthesiologist, Pre-Surgery Physician, or the patient's primary care team.
- Promotes clear communication amongst a care team and treating clinicians by ensuring awareness regarding patient care plans.
- Utilizes equipment properly.
- Participates in developing operational and programmatic improvements to the perioperative clinic, in coordination with administration and physician leadership.

- Follows patient care standards related to Surgical Services.

Minimum Education/Experience
Associate's Degree Degree from college or vocational school from a National League of Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or equivalent accredited school of nursing. The nurse shall have completed a nursing education program that included clinical experiences with actual patients under the supervision of qualified faculty.
1-2 years relevant experience
Required Licenses/Certifications
California Registered Nurse (RN) - Upon hire
Nevada Registered Nurse (RN) - Within 3 months of hire into job (Effective December 2022, if hired as a temporary or seasonal RN, must have current CA RN license only.)
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers - Upon hire
BLS/ACLS/PALS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS certification). - Within 6 months of hire into job

Required:
- Confidence and ability to communicate and outreach to other stakeholders in the perioperative process
- Leadership ability
Preferred:
- Previous Ambulatory Surgery experience
- Membership in American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)
