What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Monitoring Technician position at TAHOE REGIONAL PLANNING AGENCY?
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and our dynamic team of professionals seeks a motivated Seasonal Monitoring Technician to provide support to the Science and Data Team.
Acting under the direction of the Senior Environmental Analyst, the primary responsibility of this position is to collect, manage, and evaluate field data in support of the Monitoring and Evaluation Program. In addition to field efforts, duties of this position include and are not limited to: data entry, directed data analysis, report writing, RFP/grant writing assistance, monitoring plan development and web page content management related to a variety of environmental resource areas (such as wildlife, vegetation, water quality, air quality, noise and soils). Additional duties may be assigned.
The position will require working closely and cooperatively with TRPA Program Managers and may include working with other partnering agencies (USFS, LWQCB, CTC, NDSL, NRCS, State Parks, etc.) and the general public.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct noise, water quality, air quality, vegetation, soil, wildlife, and fisheries data collection, management, and analysis to support the Monitoring and Evaluation Program.
- Perform administrative duties related to the Monitoring and Evaluation Program, including: data entry, report writing, web page management, and assistance with grant writing and request for proposal preparation.
- Gather and interpret data related to the status and trends of various natural resource conditions.
- Interpret and implement field data collection according to established protocols. Judgment may be necessary given a unique field situation.
- Make routine decisions and seek supervisory input for non-standard decisions.
- The Senior Environmental Analyst may assign additional duties to support the Agency’s mission.
Education and Experience
- At least 3 months of natural resource management related work/field experience.
- At least 2 years of undergraduate level college completed working toward a natural resources-related degree.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of data collection, input, management and interpretation of natural resource information.
- Analytic ability to gather and interpret data in non-complex situations.
- Proficient with common word processing, spreadsheet and database programs (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access).
- Strong writing skills, organization and time management skills, including the ability to complete work assignments with minimal direct supervision.
- Ability to perform field data collection activities, including the collection of natural resource data after sufficient training is provided.
- Experience with data collection applications such as Survey 123 and Field Maps.
- Communicate detailed information verbally and in writing to other agency personnel and to the public.
- Valid California or Nevada driver’s license.

- GPS experience.
- Stream survey experience.
- Noise monitoring equipment experience.
- Bird, plant, soil identification experience.
- Raptor survey experience.
- Experience collecting field data according to established protocol.
- Experience preparing, monitoring and evaluating plans.
- Bachelor’s degree in applied natural resource management (e.g., Forestry, Wildlife, Fisheries, Hydrology, Ecology, Biology, Limnology).
- Boating experience (with certification).
Position Timeline
Mid-May 2025 – Mid-October 2025
The position will begin in mid-May and run through mid-October, with the possibility of a shortened or lengthened duration depending on project completion and funding availability.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The hourly pay is $20.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Temporary and seasonal employees who generally are scheduled to work on a short-term basis are NOT eligible for the Agency’s benefit package. The Agency does provide three (3) days of accrued paid time off (PTO) for the internship. Temporary employees are not paid for holidays.
