What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Watercraft Crew position at TAHOE REGIONAL PLANNING AGENCY?
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and our dynamic team of professionals seeks a motivated Seasonal Watercraft Crew to provide support to the Code Compliance team.
The primary functions of the Seasonal Watercraft Crew are educating the public, and enforcing the TRPA Code of Ordinances related to watercraft use on the lakes of the Tahoe Region. The crew will work in teams of two on an Agency boat, at marinas and launch ramps, and in the office.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities
- Educate the public and enforce the carbureted two-stroke engine prohibition, watercraft noise ordinances, shorezone regulations, and the 600-foot no-wake zone.
- Educate and issue warnings and corrective actions to non-compliant boaters.
- Monitor moorings and other shorezone structures and activities.
- Educate boaters about aquatic invasive species (AIS) issues as they pertain to boaters.
- Provide tours as requested.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
This position requires graduation from high school, some college coursework preferable, at least five (5) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Must be detail oriented.
- Outstanding oral and written communication and time management skills.
- Experience in working with the public.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and relay complex information to the public in an understandable fashion.
Desired Knowledge and Skills
- Boating experience including United States Coast Guard Safety Coarse or similar.
- Familiarity with a variety of watercraft and engines.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and GIS knowledge.
- Ability to utilize GPS equipment and software.
- Ability to read and interpret site plans and marine/inland water charts.
- Ability to work independently and work in groups.
- Conflict management skills are desirable.
- Ability to be creative, innovative, rational, and make decisions quickly, often in a stressful environment.
- Ability to see “the Big Picture.”
- EMT certification.
Position Timeline
Mid-May 2025 – Mid October 2025
The position will begin in mid-May and run through mid-October, with the possibility of a shortened or lengthened duration depending on project completion and funding availability.
Working Conditions/Physical Effort
- Outdoor/On-Water working environment.
- Trailer, launch and operate Agency watercraft, including a 28’, wide load twin diesel powered watercraft, 24’ outboard super vee and/or 19’ inflatable zodiac.
- Occasional office work environment and equipment.
- Bending, Stooping, Carrying, Lifting, and/or Swimming.
- Lifting of more than 50 pounds may be required.
- Use of marine navigation and communication equipment.
- Use of safety equipment; life vest, life ring, dry suit, fire extinguisher.
- Outdoor field work- walking, driving, hiking, exposure to variable terrain and extreme weather conditions are possible.
- Off-site meetings.
- Driving, sometimes off-road to remote locations.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The hourly pay is $20.00 - $30.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Temporary and seasonal employees who generally are scheduled to work on a short-term basis are NOT eligible for the Agency’s benefit package. The Agency does provide three (3) days of accrued paid time off (PTO) for the internship. Temporary employees are not paid for holidays.
