Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience. The summer internship program is 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Compensation is competitive, and financed temporary housing is available to those who qualify. Our internship program also provides you the opportunity to network with people at Takeda through various planned events and activities.

The Cell Line Development (CLD) group is responsible for producing cell lines that express clinical grade therapeutic proteins.  The integrity of therapeutic proteins is essential for patient safety and will be scrutinized extensively. Next-Gen Sequencing (NGS) is one way to identify sequence variants at the early stage of the CLD process to prevent unnecessary delay.  The bioinformatic support to analyze NGS data and to set up pipeline is needed. The selected candidate will be guided by a scientist at big picture level, but will work most independently with all coding/software related matters.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Independently test off-shelf software to analyze MiSeq NGS data and finalize the algorithm that allows identification of low levels of sequences variants.
  • Independently use BWA alignment, VarScan and PINDEL, etc to analyze NGS data and test algorithm to identify sequence variants with proof-of-concept experiments.
  • Set up the pipeline for future NGS data analysis.
  • The candidate will be expected to give a formal presentation on her or his work at the conclusion of the summer project.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited university for the semester before and immediately following the internship.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and have completed at least their junior year or be a graduate level student pursuing a Master’s degree
  • For Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, a major in computational biology, bioinformatics and computer sciences related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
  • Previous experience and sufficient coding skills will be highly appreciated.
  • Must be deadline driven and have a high level of organizational and planning skills.
  • The ideal candidate exhibits strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills; he or she also possesses the ability to work well in teams, effectively manage multiple projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.
