Job Title:  Paralegal, Financial Litigation Unit

Period of Performance:  
  • One (1) base year with four (4) one-year option periods

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The FLU Paralegal will provide legal and administrative support to the Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Responsibilities include:

Legal Support Tasks:
  • Prepare and process legal and financial documents, including motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas, garnishments, writs of execution, notices, affidavits, and proofs of claim.
  • Review and compile case materials from various sources, ensuring compliance with legal procedures.
  • Assist attorneys with trial preparation, including compiling trial notebooks, jury instructions, and witness/exhibit lists.
  • Coordinate with victim/witness specialists to ensure adherence to DOJ guidelines.
  • Verify legal citations and statutory references using online and original sources.
Administrative Support Tasks:
  • Maintain and organize case files for active and closed matters.
  • Perform docketing duties: open, update, and close cases using an automated case tracking system.
  • Manage attorneys’ calendars, track filing deadlines, and schedule interviews/conferences.
  • Respond to inquiries from attorneys, law enforcement, and other agencies.
  • Use litigation support software to prepare legal documents, charts, and visual materials.
General Office Support Tasks:
  • Answer phone calls, receive visitors, and provide information about cases and office procedures.
  • Prepare and format documents using various office software applications.
  • Ensure compliance with government security and confidentiality policies.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Experience:
    • At least two years of litigation paralegal experience (civil practice, discovery support, or financial collection experience is helpful).
    • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
  2. Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Access, and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
    • Experience with Relativity is a plus.
  3. Communication & Professional Skills:
    • Ability to work and interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to meet deadlines and work as part of a team.
    • Skill in dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  4. Security & Compliance Requirements:
    • Must pass a background investigation (Minimum Background Investigation waiver required before starting).
    • Must meet DOJ Residency Requirements (lived in the U.S. for three of the last five years or have worked for the U.S. overseas in a federal/military capacity).
    • Must sign confidentiality agreements, including:
      • Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)
      • Foreign National Relative or Associates Disclosure
      • Loyalty Statement
