This is an exciting opportunity to lead the engineering and technical services function at the Colstrip Energy Plant—a critical part of our commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient energy generation.
As the Manager of Engineering and Technical Services, you will lead a talented team of engineers and technical professionals to deliver cost-effective solutions that support the safe and efficient operation of the Colstrip plant. You’ll be responsible for technical leadership, team development, project oversight, and ensuring compliance with corporate, industry, and regulatory standards. This role is integral to the plant’s strategic initiatives and long-term success.
What will you own?
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers (mechanical, civil, electrical, I&C), providing guidance, coaching, and performance management.
- Translate plant-wide business goals into engineering strategies that support reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Establish and monitor departmental goals, KPIs, and improvement initiatives.
Technical & Project Management
- Provide technical direction to operations, maintenance, and project teams, ensuring high-quality and timely solutions.
- Manage engineering support for capital projects, system modifications, cost estimates, and long-range planning.
- Oversee the execution of station modifications and capital improvements to ensure they are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Operational Excellence
- Develop and maintain engineering standards and procedures to ensure operational effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor the status of construction and maintenance schedules; implement corrective actions when needed.
- Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives related to equipment and system reliability.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a key liaison between the plant and corporate leadership, external engineering firms, and regulatory agencies.
- Collaborate with Plant Manager, Chief Fossil Operator, and Director-level stakeholders to align engineering activities with business goals.
- Represent Talen Montana on industry committees and technical code development groups.
Financial Accountability
- Oversee multi-million-dollar engineering and construction budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and high ROI.
- Support the financial planning and justification of capital investments.
What you have:
- Proven experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams in a power generation or industrial operations environment.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, develop, and motivate teams.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical projects from concept through execution.
- In-depth understanding of engineering principles, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field); advanced degree or PE license preferred.
