ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to join our client’s senior leadership team. In this high-impact role, you will oversee the organization’s financial operations, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and contribute directly to the organization’s long-term growth and sustainability.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller plays a critical role in aligning financial strategy with organizational goals, fostering transparency and efficiency, and leading a high-performing fiscal team. This is more than an accounting role — it’s a leadership opportunity to influence culture, innovation, and operational success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a strategic financial leader, actively participating in organizational planning and sustainability initiatives.

  • Oversee and direct financial operations including accounting, budgeting, payroll, procurement, and compliance.

  • Ensure full compliance with GAAP, GASB, Uniform Guidance, and funding requirements.

  • Lead the annual budget planning process, forecasting, and financial alignment with strategic goals.

  • Coordinate and lead all annual audits, including Single Audits across multiple entities.

  • Implement and monitor internal controls to ensure financial integrity and operational effectiveness.

  • Mentor, train, and evaluate fiscal staff, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.

  • Guide modernization efforts of financial systems and integrate new technologies (e.g., Oracle NetSuite).

  • Monitor and manage funding sources, drawdowns, reimbursements, and compliance reporting.

  • Deliver insightful financial reporting to executive leadership, government agencies, and stakeholders.

  • Stay up to date on evolving regulations, ensuring continuous improvement and best practices.

  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to align financial planning with programmatic and operational needs.

  • Contribute to strengthening organizational culture with an emphasis on accountability and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in full-cycle accounting, budget management, and financial planning.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, OMB Circular A-122, and Uniform Guidance.

  • Experience with federal/state funding and grant compliance.

Preferred:

  • CPA license or equivalent certification.

  • Experience in nonprofit financial management and leading Single Audits.

  • Proficiency in financial systems like Oracle NetSuite.

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong data analysis capabilities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE TRAITS
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills.

  • Effective communicator and cross-functional collaborator.

  • Values integrity, transparency, and continuous improvement.

  • Brings a solutions-oriented mindset to complex challenges.

  • Passion for supporting mission-driven work in the nonprofit space.
