Job Summary
The Labor and Delivery Nurse plays a crucial role in providing care to expectant mothers during labor and delivery. This position requires a compassionate and skilled nurse who can effectively support patients through the childbirth process, ensuring both maternal and neonatal health. The Labor and Delivery Nurse collaborates with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care in a fast-paced environment.
Duties
- Monitor the health status of mothers and newborns throughout the labor process.
- Assess and document vital signs, contractions, and fetal heart rates.
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families regarding the labor process.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and perform IV insertions as needed.
- Assist in delivery procedures, ensuring a safe environment for both mother and child.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans.
- Educate patients on post-delivery care, breastfeeding, and newborn care practices.
- Maintain accurate patient records using electronic health record systems such as Athenahealth.
Skills
- Experience working with children and understanding their unique needs during labor.
- Knowledge of dementia care principles for patients with cognitive impairments.
- Familiarity with coding practices relevant to patient documentation.
- Proficiency in IV insertion techniques.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities to provide tailored care.
- Understanding of mammography processes as it relates to women's health.
- Background in nursing home settings or critical care environments is advantageous.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
