What is a cytotechnologist?
A cytotechnologist is a laboratory professional who examines human cell samples under a microscope to identify abnormalities, such as cancerous or precancerous cells, by analyzing their structure and appearance, typically working closely with a pathologist to diagnose diseases based on cellular changes; essentially, they are trained to detect potential disease through microscopic evaluation of cells from various body sites.
Work Shift :
This is a Monday-Friday position 7-330pm or 8-430pm in Toledo.
Job Description :
Ensures that specimens received in the laboratory are handled properly as to identification, numbering and preparation as smears or cell blocks.
Makes initial diagnosis on all cytopathology consultations.
Makes final diagnosis on all negative gynecological material; refers all abnormal gynecological material and all non-gyn material to pathologist for final diagnosis.
Utilizes laboratory computer information system to enter results correctly and enter necessary QC / QA information. Must be able to retrieve necessary patient information.
Recommends changes in procedures to address quality issues and provide customer satisfaction.
Participates in formal and informal education as related to clinical cytology and cytopathology.
Records and maintains accurate records regarding slides screened and hours required for screening.
Job Requirements :
Must be ASCP certified in cytotechnology with a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited college / university.
Must be able to move continuously about hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing.
Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills.
Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards and flammable liquids.
