Consulting Teacher Position: Peer Assistance and Review

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:   Consulting Teachers, along with other coaching related activities, model best practices, observe, coach, and confer with Participating Teachers in the Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) program, which will aid in the Participating Teachers’ professional growth. Participating Teachers include both volunteer teachers and teachers referred to PAR through the evaluation process.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE TO:

  • Meet with the Participating Teacher to discuss the PAR program, establish performance goals, and create an assistance plan.
  • Conduct multiple observations for the Participating Teacher during classroom instruction, as well as have both pre-observation and post-observation conferences to problem solve and coordinate support.
  • Coach and demonstrate effective teaching practices and strategies for classroom management, instruction, data assessment, and curriculum development.
  • Monitor the progress of a referred Participating Teacher. Provide timely, detailed, written reports to the referred Participating Teacher and the PAR Joint Committee for discussion and review.
  • Continue to meet with a referred Participating Teacher until the performance of the Participating Teacher is satisfactory or it is determined that further assistance will not be productive.
  • Meet as necessary with the Joint Committee and Site Administrators.
  • Be willing to work with both elementary and secondary (middle and high school) teachers.
  • Travel to multiple locations to work with teachers participating in the PAR program.

 

Special Condition of Employment: The Consulting Teacher position is a three-year term.  While on assignment as a full-time Consulting Teacher, the teacher will be considered on leave to a categorical program from his/her regular assignment.  Functions performed by Consulting Teachers shall not constitute either management or supervisory functions. The Consulting Teacher shall continue all rights of an OEA bargaining unit member.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a professional clear California Teaching Credential.  
  • Minimum of 4 years of recent teaching experience, experience in OUSD preferred.
  • Demonstrate successful and effective classroom teaching experience and mastery of a range of teaching strategies, instructional techniques, subject matter competency, and classroom management skills.  
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Mentoring and/or coaching experience desirable.  
  • A willingness and commitment to participate in professional development to broaden one’s understanding of principles of teaching and learning and to strengthen coaching skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • An understanding of the OUSD/OEA negotiated contract, due process, and duty of fair representation.  
  • Must be able to travel to various sites to coach and meet with Participating Teachers.

All applicants must submit at least four current (within the last two years) reference letters from the following sources: Principal or immediate supervisor; an OEA representative; two teachers at the applicant’s site or program. These letters should address current experience in the areas of teacher leadership, formal/informal coaching and teacher support, and the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others.
