Job Summary:
The Fiber Optics Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cable systems. This includes both underground and aerial installations, troubleshooting network issues, and ensuring the integrity of fiber connections. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented problem solver with a strong technical background and the ability to work in various environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, maintain, and repair fiber optic cable lines (aerial, underground, and inside plant).
- Read and interpret project plans, specifications, and fiber splice diagrams.
- Perform cable management, including slack storage, routing, dressing, and labeling.
- Utilize and maintain fiber optic tools such as fusion splicers, cleavers, OTDRs, and light source/power meters.
- Conduct network troubleshooting and diagnose fiber optic issues.
- Work with fiber optic termination cabinets, splice enclosures, and fan-outs following manufacturer guidelines.
- Prepare and complete daily reports, timesheets, and equipment inspections.
- Train and assist other technicians in fiber optic installation and maintenance.
- Attend project meetings and coordinate with engineers, project managers, and company leadership.
- Follow all safety protocols, wear appropriate gear, and operate company-provided safety equipment.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in fiber optics or related field is a plus.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, or network maintenance.
- Certifications such as BICSI, IMSA, ETA, Fiber Optic Association, OSHA, or CPR are preferred.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical plans, diagrams, and OTDR traces.
- Experience with network equipment such as modems, Ethernet switches, routers, and CCTV.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and terrains, including construction sites and highways.
- Must be able to lift up to 85 lbs with assistance, climb ladders, and work at heights of up to 30 feet.
- Some computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Availability for occasional evening work and travel as required.
- Must be 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
- CDL license is a plus.
Work Conditions:
- Travel required throughout the Southeast United States.
- Must be comfortable working in various conditions, including confined spaces and elevated work environments.
- Overnight stays required (company provides accommodations, with technicians sharing rooms).
