The main function of an environmental engineer is to design and lead EHS operational strategies and process improvements.

What does this group do?

Ensure the safety and well-being of employees, as well as compliance with environmental regulations for Corporate Irvine Site, R&D labs, and Field teams. Some key responsibilities of our team include (but are not limited to) the following :

  • Developing and Implementing EHS Standards
  • Ensuring that all operations comply with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Providing EHS expertise for new processes, new products, and technologies and participating in the change control process of the site
  • Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with the company's operations.
  • Emergency Response
  • Preparing and providing comprehensive safety training to employees.
  • Evaluating and mitigating the environmental impact of the company's activities.
  • Analyzing incidents, injuries, and near-misses to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.

Does this team use any specific technology / software? We use VelocityEHS, Sharepoint and Microsoft.

While it is not expected for them to excel in all areas, a general comprehension level is required. Important qualifications and skills include :

  • Experience : Relevant experience in EHS roles, preferably within the medical device or related industries.
  • Professional Certifications : Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) can be advantageous.

  • Change Management : Skills in managing and implementing change within an organization, particularly about safety culture and practices.
  • What will a typical workday look like? This role requires a balance of fieldwork, training, compliance management, and collaboration with various teams. A typical day involves a variety of tasks aimed at ensuring a safe and compliant workplace. This can include :

  • Team meeting to discuss the week's priorities, ongoing projects, and any incidents or issues that need attention
  • Conduct regular inspections of the facility to identify potential hazards, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and verify that safety protocols are being followed.
  • Perform risk assessments for new and existing processes, equipment, or changes in the workplace to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Provide safety training to employees.
  • Review and update safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Investigate any accidents or near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and compliance audits. Prepare reports for management and regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Work closely with other departments, such as operations, maintenance, and human resources, to address safety concerns and promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.
  • Identify opportunities for improving safety processes and implement best practices to enhance the overall safety and health of the workplace.
  • What will the work schedule be? Can any overtime be expected? How many days onsite? The work schedule is from 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM, with a one-hour lunch break. This position requires five days on-site with no remote work options. While overtime is generally not expected, there may be rare occasions that necessitate minimal overtime.

    Will there be any travel involved? No.

    Will you consider remote work? If yes, will they need to be in a specific time zone? This position requires 100% on-site presence. Remote work is not an option.

  • Education and Experience :

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 0-2 years of experience required

  • Proven expertise in the usage of MS Office Suite
  • Strong documentation, communication and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills
  • Substantial understanding and knowledge of EPA, OSHA, local and federal regulations

  • Substantial understanding of processes and equipment used in assigned work

  • Adhere to all EHS rules and requirements and take adequate control measures in preventing injuries to themselves and others as well as to the protection of the environment and prevention of pollution under their span of influence / control
  • Key Responsibilities :

  • Evaluate environmental and safety needs and propose options and implementation plans
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and lead the implementation of processes to ensure compliance with EHS goals and programs
  • Provide EHS expertise for new processes, new products, and technologies and participate in the change control process of the site
  • Researched, analyze, and evaluated data to create non-routine reports in response to internal and external requests
  • Investigate causes for EHS incidents from employees and deviations from compliance and recommend sound corrective and preventive measures to avoid recurrence and provide feedback to relevant stakeholders
  • Develop and revise specialized and / or complex EHS training and written programs to ensure compliance with all applicable EHS regulations; may deliver training as necessary
  • Act as liaison with government agencies for EHS managers as assigned by Manager.
  • Conduct periodic internal inspections and audits at the site to ensure continuous compliance with applicable regulations and provide guidance to appropriate team members
  • Act as a back-up emergency incident commander and / or safety officer as required
