What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller (Private Foundation) position at TalentConnect?
Our client, a private foundation in NYC, is seeking a Controller to join their team.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller will be responsible for the foundations accounting operations and their financial reporting. The Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, development-related activities, and cashflow management. The Controller has a bookkeeper direct report and is responsible for the close of the month-end and year-end books, assisting independent auditors with annual financial statement audits, and assisting with the financial analysis of our organization. The Controller serves as a key financial consultant to both the Executive Director and the Board. The Controller is the finance lead for our program activities, including our mortgage servicing, affordable home finance programs, and tracking of balances with our community development construction projects.
Position Responsibilities
- Oversee the accounting and reporting functions on a day-to-day basis, including invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll reconciliations and accounting, and general ledger accounting.
- Oversee payroll function and associated records in collaboration with third party payroll provider
- Administer the general ledger application, QuickBooks desktop
- Review and approve bi-weekly payroll
- Oversee payroll accounting and related allocation of salaries and benefits between entities and programs
- Oversight of the timely reconciliation of all bank accounts
- Support independent auditors to ensure the timely completion of the annual financial statement audits
- Manage the relationships with banks and other financial counterparties and vendors
- Coordinate and prepare audit schedules for the year-end audits.
- Oversee and ensure the accurate and timely monthly close of the financial books for monthly reporting, quarterly and annual reporting
- Present monthly financials to the Executive Director, including highlighting of key operational and cashflow trends
- Prepare and present to the Board and Audit Committee relevant financial schedules
- Prepare annual budget and track actual activities versus budget
- Project cashflow at least a year in advance and track actual versus projected cashflow. Proactively highlight any potential cashflow issues, and recommend applicable remedial steps
- Maintain sound internal controls
- Manage the procure to pay process, ensuring appropriate controls over vendor payments
- Work collaboratively with operational leaders to manage organizational programmatic finance workflows
- Supervise, coach and develop one Finance Associate
Desired Qualifications
- CPA designation, MBA and/or business or accounting degree desired.
- Experience with QuickBooks preferred.
- Experience with Google Sheets, a variety of Expense Management Software Platforms. Strong ability to learn and implement new systems and technology.
- Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, financial analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and payroll within the nonprofit setting.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting and financial statements desired
- Experience with housing and community development desired
- Technologically savvy with experience selecting and overseeing cloud financial software installations and managing relationships with software vendors
- Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, which allow for strategic financial analysis versus conventional nonprofit reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management and other outside partners.
- Experience managing remote teams, ideally in a geographically dispersed context, with a high standard of excellence and accountability.
- Entrepreneurial style, with enthusiasm for working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Energized to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for strategic decision-making purposes at a mission-first organization focused on racial equity.

The compensation for this position ranges from $140,000.00 - $160,000.00. Actual compensation will be dependent upon the specific role, office location as well as the individual’s qualifications, experience, skills and certifications.
