Job Summary:
The Cath Lab Technician is responsible for assisting cardiologists during catheterization procedures, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining the operation of equipment in the catheterization laboratory. They are trained in a variety of medical technologies, including cardiac imaging, monitoring, and sterile techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
Assisting During Procedures:
Assist cardiologists and surgeons during diagnostic and interventional procedures, such as angiograms, angioplasty, and stent placement.
Prepare and set up the catheterization lab, including sterile field setup, equipment, and materials needed for procedures.
Monitor patients' vital signs and equipment during the procedure.
Equipment Operation:
Operate imaging equipment (e.g., fluoroscopy) and other medical instruments, ensuring they function properly and maintain high-quality imaging.
Maintain and troubleshoot equipment in the cath lab, ensuring all tools are sterilized and ready for use.
Patient Care:
Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the process, checking medical history, and ensuring they are comfortable.
Assist in positioning patients for optimal imaging and procedure access.
Provide post-procedure care, ensuring patient comfort and monitoring for complications or side effects.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
Document patient information, procedure details, and any changes during the procedure.
Ensure accurate and timely recording of test results, images, and clinical observations.
Sterility and Safety:
Maintain strict sterility during procedures to minimize the risk of infection.
Adhere to safety protocols to protect both patients and staff, including radiation safety protocols.
Collaboration:
Work closely with cardiologists, nurses, and other medical staff to ensure the effective and safe completion of procedures.
Participate in team discussions regarding patient care, treatment plans, and procedural outcomes.
Education and Training:
Stay current on new technologies, procedures, and regulations in the cath lab field.
Provide guidance and support to junior staff and assist in training new technicians.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education:
Associate’s degree in Radiologic Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, or related field.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
Certification in Cardiovascular Technology or Radiologic Technology (e.g., ARRT, RCIS) preferred.
Experience:
At least 1-2 years of experience working in a cath lab or relevant clinical environment.
Familiarity with cardiac procedures, patient monitoring, and medical imaging technology.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of cath lab equipment, imaging techniques, and sterilization procedures.
Excellent communication skills to interact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare staff.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining patient care and safety.
Work Environment:
The work typically takes place in a hospital's cardiac catheterization lab, a sterile and specialized medical environment.
The role may require extended periods of standing, lifting, and assisting patients on and off procedure tables.
There may be exposure to radiation, so proper safety precautions are essential.
