The Director of Perioperative Services oversees nursing practice and operations within assigned perioperative areas, ensuring alignment with Tamarack Health’s Mission, Vision, Values, and strategic initiatives, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim: enhancing patient experience, improving population health, and reducing costs. This role emphasizes continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and high-quality patient care. leads the nursing team, collaborates with other departments, manages resources efficiently, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, clinical knowledge, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Departmental Leadership and Direction
Maintains current knowledge of industry trends, standards, regulations, and reimbursement mechanisms.
Ensures compliance with accrediting/licensing agencies and maintains continuous survey readiness.
Develops and delivers high-quality, innovative services focused on patient satisfaction.
Builds collaborative relationships with medical staff, other departments, and external stakeholders.
Leads and supports infection control, patient safety, and emergency preparedness in partnership with relevant teams.
Promotes a culture of safety by monitoring the environment and equipment and correcting hazards.
Upholds behavioral standards and serves as a professional role model.
Enhances evidence-based nursing practice through clinical guidelines and team collaboration.
Fosters a respectful and inclusive environment for patients and staff.
Leads monthly nursing leadership meetings and creates action plans in response to employee engagement feedback.
Collaborates with other departments to support organizational success.
Organizational Structure and Staffing
Designs and maintains a departmental structure that defines responsibilities, reporting lines, and services provided.
Develops and implements a master staffing plan to ensure adequate and qualified coverage across service hours.
Participates in recruitment, retention, and onboarding of staff, in collaboration with Human Resources.
Maintains accurate job descriptions and assists with interviewing and hiring decisions.
Oversees staff scheduling and ensures compliance with staffing policies and labor agreements.
Conducts performance evaluations, provides coaching, and addresses performance or behavior issues in a timely and consistent manner.
Supports professional development and facilitates opportunities for staff growth and education.
Engages in union collaboration and administration as needed.
Ensures department representation on key committees and teams.
Operational and Financial Management
Defines resource needs (equipment, space, and supplies) to support departmental functions.
Prepares and monitors operating and capital budgets aligned with organizational goals.
Maintains fiscal responsibility by managing expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
Oversees supply and equipment inventory systems to ensure availability and control.
Collaborates with Building Operations to ensure maintenance of physical facilities and equipment.
Reviews and approves timekeeping and payroll processes.
Quality and Performance Improvement
Leads departmental participation in hospital-wide quality initiatives and performance improvement activities.
Ensures staff are trained and actively engaged in quality and safety efforts.
Applies Lean methodology and A3 thinking to drive continuous improvement.
Aligns departmental goals with organizational performance standards.
Community and Professional Engagement
Represents Tamarack Health in the community, volunteering at least 12 hours annually.
Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations to support nursing practice and leadership.
Collaborates with academic institutions to coordinate educational activities and student engagement.
Promotes Tamarack Health’s image and role within the community
Education/Experience:
Required
- Minimum 5 years of experience as Registered Nurse in a hospital setting
- Minimum 5 years progressive, continuous management/supervisory experience
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing
- Master's degree in relevant field encouraged
Licensure/Certification:
Required
- Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Current BLS certification
Preferred
- Professional Certification recommended
