What are the responsibilities and job description for the Patient Care Tech | Full Time Emergency Department position at Tamarack Health Hayward Medical Center?
The Patient Care Technician provides clinical and administrative support. The Patient Care Technician assists patients with activities of daily living, prepares patients for physician examination, measures and records vital signs, performs EKG’s, IV placement, and collects lab samples as needed. They also assist with splints and slings, procedures, and exams as needed. This position cleans, inspects, and sets up emergency rooms and equipment.
- Collects lab samples from patients, such as blood or urine.
- Performs EKG’s as needed.

- Assist RN or providers with procedures as needed.
- Assists with exams as needed.
- Assists with fitting patients with splints and slings.
- Provides care appropriate to condition, age and ability, the psychosocial and physical needs of patient, including adult, pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population within the PCT’s scope of practice and hospital policy.
- Provides patient care which may include bed bath, shower, tub bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
- Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan or commode and ambulating patients.
- Prepares patients for meals; services and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary. Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
- Answers patient’s call lights, anticipates patients’ needs and makes regular rounds of assigned patients. Makes rounds at least once an hour when possible.
- Takes and records vital signs, weight, intake-output and reports to RN.
- Assists with non-sterile wound cleaning and dressing.
- Enters and verifies patient data in the EMR system per current standards and policies.
- Maintains equipment, utility areas and support areas in a clean and neat environment. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Restocks and orders supplies as needed.
- Answers telephone/intercom in a polite manner. Communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
- Schedules surgeries, diagnostic tests and appointments as appropriate.
- Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
- Observes patient’s mental and physical conditions, reports any changes or complaints to RN.
- Participates in patient care conferences PRN.
- Consults with other departments as necessary to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and quality.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to RNs, staff members, medical staff and other providers.
- Orients new employees when necessary.
- Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- CNA or EMT or LPN license required
- BLS certification required prior to providing patient care
- Previous patient care experience preferred
