The Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for performing duties related to patient admission, transfer and discharge, communication with patients, guests and staff, electronic health records maintenance, and other duties of a clerical nature.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Assists with the preparation of patient medical records for admissions, transfers, and discharge.
- Notifies appropriate nursing staff to assist patients/physicians in the care of the patient.
- Notifies RN of new and/or stat orders. Is accurate with transcription orders.
- Enters and verifies data in the computer system.
- Orders supplies as needed. Maintains supplies in a neat and orderly environment.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family. Defers to the RN to provide explanations and verbal reassurance as appropriate.
- Answers telephone/patient call system in a polite manner. Communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
- Maintains equipment, utility areas and support areas in a clean and neat environment.
- Reports patient complaints to RN.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to RNs, staff members, medical staff and other providers.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Treats patient and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible & organized. Is able to function under stressful situations.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Uses proper body mechanics.
- Orients new employees when necessary.
- Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity, efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- Some administrative/clerical experience preferred
