TAMKO Building Products is seeking a Research and Development Intern to provide technical laboratory support, at its corporate research and development facility located in Joplin, Missouri. This position is primarily assigned to the support of TAMKO’s Asphalt Supply Strategy. This includes performing laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics of solid or liquid materials for such purposes as quality control.
Summary of Essential Job Functions:

- Execute standard asphalt property testing to determine characteristics and suitability for use in manufacturing: conduct flux and flux blends evaluations, flash point, softening point, penetration, prepare coating samples for testing, incorporate filler into blown coating at specified percentage, softening point rings, stain rings, OM panels, flex puddles, filled viscosity samples, PAV lids, conduct testing on coating samples, softening point, staining, flexibility, filled viscosity, PAV, perform routine maintenance on equipment.
- Operate centrifuge, agitators, viscometer, chemical balance scales, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, and other equipment.
- Test samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.
- Record test results on standardized forms and write test reports describing procedures used.
- Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment.
Requirements:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
- Ability to conduct basic graphical analysis; statistical training a plus.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to operate a computer and use software application programs.
