OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY :
- Monthly fact-checking of feature stories for each issue
- Reporting and writing for the Economic Backbone and Around the State sections
- With collaboration and direction from the Executive Editor and the Managing Editor, contribute to story planning and execution of editorial features
- Copyediting and proofreading as part of finalizing each issue
- Collaborate with Editor and colleagues on digital storytelling
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
>> Fact-check stories using guidelines developed with the managing and executive editor.
>> Inform yourself about Florida and micro- and macro-economics. Use a variety of sources — people, newspapers, periodicals, digital sources, podcasts and reports from governmental and non-governmental sources.
>> Use all your knowledge of Florida and your region to generate story ideas. Prepare for and participate in story meetings at which ideas are refined and/or story lineups for specific issues are determined.
>> Cover long-form feature stories developed in collaboration with the managing editor and executive editor.
>> Deliver stories and their relevant components — including headlines and subheds for mainbar, sidebars and boxes — by deadlines established by the managing editor and executive editor.
>> Participate in the final editing process, including reading the complete magazine in “blueline” form; identify misspellings and other errors and suggest any last-minute changes that may be appropriate.
>> Participate collegially in staff activities and contribute to the creative atmosphere and process of the editorial team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Solid writing and reporting skills
- Consistently demonstrate a collaborative attitude to build positive working relationships with colleagues at all levels
- Creative curiosity about Florida places, people and events that shape the economy and public life
- Careful attention to detail and a high standards for facts and accuracy in journalistic endeavors
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Previous writing and reporting experience
2. Excellent news judgment on all matters related to Florida business, public policy and current events
3. Advanced research skills that contribute depth, nuance and accuracy for both long-form pieces and short-form storytelling
4. College degree or equivalent experience
5. Strong computer (knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel) and computational skills
6. Familiarity with social medial channels and digital journalism along with the best practices for using such tools to serve Florida Trend readers
7. Outside interests and experiences that contribute diverse thinking to our team as well as depth and perspective to your journalism
WORKING CONDITIONS:

- Requires occasional travel as regular part of the job.
