What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hillsborough County Schools Reporter position at Tampa Bay Times?
Hillsborough County’s school district is practically a city unto itself. It’s the nation’s seventh largest school district. It’s Tampa Bay’s fourth largest employer. Its budget is two-and-a-half times the city of Tampa’s. And it operates in Florida, which is one of the most scrutinized education systems partly because it has long served as a testing lab for the rest of the nation. The ceiling for coverage here is very high – as are expectations for the reporter assigned to cover it. It’s a beat that offers plenty of room for accountability work, not just on the leaders who shape state and district policy, but on the teachers entrusted with the care of nearly a quarter-million children. We want stories about what it’s like in our classrooms during a disruptive era defined by social media, book bans, mass shootings and pandemic. There are opportunities for explanatory features about the evolving state of education, the challenges of teaching and parenting, and what life is like for kids growing up after COVID. You’ll write about money, influence, bureaucracy, equity and the future, and in doing so, will help shape the education discourse in Florida. If you’re interested, please contact Tampa Bay Times education editor Jay Cridlin at jcridlin@tampabay.com.
