Job Summary:
Incumbent will function as a member of a TCC Type 2 Wildland Fire Contract Crew, and function as a Faller on the crew (FAL2 or FAL3) if qualified.

Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

Representative Duties: Under direct supervision of the Crew Boss, Job incumbent will:

1. Learn fire management program requirements, suppression tactics, methods, and procedures in the use and maintenance of wildland firefighting hand tools, pumps, hoses, chainsaws, GPS units, compass, and other related fire suppression equipment. Attend basic forestry and wildlife management courses in subjects such as basic fire orientation and firefighting.

2. Maintain gear and equipment.

3. Assist in slash burn operations.

4. Operate water pumps.

5. Participate in projects supporting crew maintenance and operation, including fuels mitigation projects involving piling of limbs and slash, and cutting and pruning of trees.

6. Job location will based in Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, or Holy Cross, Alaska during the wildland fire season, approximately 5/1 to 10/31.

7. Positions may require travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; must be on stand-by or recall status during the fire season.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must be eighteen years of age.

2. Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) Certification.

3. Entry or trainee level work in support of Fire and Hazardous Fuels mitigation.

4. National Wildland Coordinating Group (NWCG) Certificates (ICS-100, ICS-700/800, L-180, S-130, and S-190).

5. Must possess a valid Alaska driver's license that is Real I.D. compliant. An individual without an Alaska driver's license, who meets the minimum age and experience requirements, may apply for the vacancy. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon acquision of an Alaska driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

6. Applicant must be able to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level as defined in Federal Publication PMS 307, Work Capacity Test Administrator Guide. This test requires that the applicant complete a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and co workers.

2. Ability to use hand tools to construct fire lines.

3. Ability to learn field work procedures and routines, use measurement tools and record field notes.

4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn and retain information, ask questions and elicit required information, speak and write clearly and effectively.

5. Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations which may involve fractions, decimals and percentages.

6. Ability to learn basic map drafting techniques and to interpret and navigate from maps.

7. Ability to make decisions and maintain composure in stressful situations.

8. Ability to safely operate noncommercial motorized vehicles and firefighting equipment.

Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical demands: Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 45 pounds and use hand tools to construct fire lines. Ability to perform strenuous physical work in adverse environmental conditions. Must have the ability to stoop, climb, balance, stand, walk and sit for extended periods of time. Will fly in small fixed wing aircraft or helicopters; and will handle hazardous materials. Incumbent will work and live with others over an extended period of time in remote, primitive field camp conditions and work outside in all weather conditions and in a smoky environment. Will operatate noncommercial motorized vehicles and firefighting equipment. Will be on assignments in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days.


Summation



Summation: The ideal candidate for this position will be familiar with a variety of wildland fire fighting concepts, practices, and procedures, and willing to travel to remote location in and outside of Alaska for extended periods on assignment.
