Job Summary
Job Summary: Medical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of specimen processing and clerical tasks for the laboratory service in support of the Upper Tanana Health Center and Tanana Chiefs Conference Rural Health Program. Incumbent will perform patient intake for lab services, perform phlebotomy services for the laboratory and nursing staff, process specimens for testing and/or referral to the appropriate reference laboratory, and performs testing offered on the UTHC Laboratory testing menu under supervision of the Lead Travel Clinical Laboratory Scientist and Laboratory Director. Incumbent will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot analytical equipment, perform quality control, and appropriately address issues. Incumbent will rotate on-call responsibilities and weekend coverage as needed. Incumbent may be responsible for responding in case of internal or external disasters.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director and the Lead Travel Laboratory Scientist, job incumbent will be assigned from the following representative duties:
1. Performs patient intake and collects all types of laboratory specimens from patients. Evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing. Identifies specimen issues and works with medical staff to achieve resolution.
2. Processes specimens received in the laboratory for testing or transfer to Chief Andrew Isaac laboratory. Properly accessions the laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system for testing. Coordinate samples for shipping, transport samples to local shipping services.
3. Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all section of the laboratory under the supervision of the Lead Tech or designee.
4. Enters and verifies results per laboratory’s established policies and procedures.
5. Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results. Understands and follows established infection control practices.
6. Performs scheduled maintenance on all instruments. Performs quality control and notifies staff technologist of any problems and corrective actions taken.
7. Assists, as instructed, in the orientation of new employees. Participates in quality improvement process/projects, both in the laboratory and the health center.
8. Shares after hours “on-call” and weekend coverage on a rotational basis with back up help from one of the staff MLS. Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.
9. Provides clerical support for laboratory staff; process incoming and outgoing lab reports, make copies, maintain and organize laboratory filing system, aid in gathering data for end of the month statistical reports.
10. Assists the lead MLS in administrative duties as required.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. One year of clinical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Able to demonstrate the core competencies annually.
4. Phlebotomy experience preferred.
5. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
6. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements and State of Alaska background check.

1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life.
2. Must be clear and concise, both verbally and in writing when communicating with staff and the public.
3. Ability to speak courteously when on the telephone. Ability to relate to the public in a caring, tactful, and courteous manner at all times.
4. Ability to work independently as part of the diverse health care team.
5. Ability to uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of the laboratory team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.

Physical demands: Able to spend long periods of time standing or sitting. Have good color discernment. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and hazardous materials.
