Representative Duties: Under direct supervision of the Crew Boss Job incumbent will:
1. Function as a Squad boss on wildland fire deployments, and learn fire management program requirements, suppression tactics, methods, and procedures in the use and maintenance of wildland firefighting hand tools, pumps, hoses, chainsaws, GPS units, compass, and other related fire suppression equipment. Attend basic forestry and wildfire management courses in subjects such as basic fire orientation and firefighting.
2. Maintain gear and equipment.
3. Assist in slash burn operations.
4. Operate water pumps.
5. Participate in projects supporting crew maintenance and operation, including fuels mitigation projects involving piling of limbs and slash, and cutting and pruning of trees.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Must be eighteen years of age.
2. FFT1 Certification.
3. Incident Commander Type 5 Certification.
4. Entry or trainee level work in support of Fire and Hazardous Fuels mitigation.
5. National Wildland Coordinating Group (NWCG) Certificates (I-100, L-180, S-130, S-190).
6. Must possess a valid Alaska driver's license. An individual without an Alaska driver's license, who meets the minimum age and experience requirements, may apply for the vacancy. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon acquision of an Alaska driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.
7. Applicant must be able to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level as defined in Federal Publication PMS 307, Work Capacity Test Administrator Guide. This test requires that the applicant complete a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less and additionally meet the following requirements: a. 1.5 mile run in a time of 10:35 or less b. 40 sit-ups in 60 seconds c. 25 pushups in 60 seconds d. Chin ups based on body weighto i. More than 170 = 4 ii. 135-170 = 5 iii. 110-135 = 6 iv. Less than 110 = 7
8. Positions may require travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; must be on stand-by or recall status during the fire season. Must be available for assignments in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days; must fly in small fixed wing aircraft or helicopters; and handle hazardous materials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and co workers.
2. Ability to perform strenuous physical work in adverse environmental conditions, lift and carry heavy loads and use hand tools to construct fire lines.
3. Ability to learn field work procedures and routines, use measurement tools and record field notes.
4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn and retain information, ask questions and elicit required information, speak and write clearly and effectively.
5. Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations which may involve fractions, decimals and percentages.
6. Ability to learn basic map drafting techniques and to interpret and navigate from maps.
7. Ability to make decisions and maintain calm behavior in stressful situations.
8. Ability to safely operate noncommercial motorized vehicles and firefighting equipment.
9. Ability to work and live cooperativly with others over an extended period of time in remote, primitive field camp conditions and work outside in all weather conditions and in a smokey environment.
Supervision: This position has minimal supervisory responsibilities; the position will collaborate with the Crew Boss overseeing the assigned squad members ensuring safety and efficiency.
