WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:
On-Site: This role is on-site five days a week (M-F, normal business hours) at our Del Mar office (12400 High Bluff Drive, San Diego, CA 92130) due to the nature of the work involved.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
The Model Maker II is responsible for performing set-ups and machining of close tolerance biomedical hardware on lathes, mills and various other machine tools. Interfaces with mechanical engineering on the design feasibility and fabrication of machined, molded and cast parts. Assists with designs and constructs tools, molds, jigs and fixtures for assembly and manufacturing needs to meet production schedules and objectives. Ensures that parts are produced to product specifications and within established completion time.
- Fabricates precision parts in prototype quantities in all materials including aluminum, stainless, plastics and other materials, working from drawings, diagrams, and sketches.
- Designs specialized cutting tools for proprietary product purposes.
- Assembles mock-ups to simulate new product appearance.
- Checks drawings versus the project input for correctness and conformance.
- Plans assignments; lays-out, sets up, operates and makes tool adjustments for various types of manual, numerically controlled, and computerized machine shop equipment used in carrying out work.
- Checks and inspects machining operations against specified tolerances.
- Performs first article inspections using precisions measuring instruments to check work.
- Identifies and repairs minor machine malfunctions.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Ability to create CNC programs and fabricate parts from 3D models and conventional drawings with a high degree of creativity.
- Knowledge of Solidworks or MasterCAM a plus.
- Ability to read and follow procedures and flow diagrams.
- Ability to effectively share information and ideas within and outside of department in written or verbal form; able to put forth own ideas and gain understanding from others.
- Proficient at supporting effective interactions between team members and among cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to schedule and coordinate project priorities and resources and to produce high quality work.
- Experience with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Minimum certifications/educational level:
- HS Diploma, some post high school technical training preferred.
- Minimum experience:
- 2 years’ experience in an engineering support environment including:
- Creating designs using Mastercam, ProNC, or comparable software.
- Fabricating intricate micro parts with multiple setups and good surface finish.
- Designing fixtures for fabricating or modifying machined or molded parts.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The starting base pay range for this position is $24.49 - $30.57 per hour. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
Tandem offers health care benefits such as medical, dental, vision available your first day, as well as health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts. You’ll also receive 11 paid holidays per year, a minimum of 20 days of paid time off (with accrual starting on day 1) and you will have access to a 401k plan with company match as well as an Employee Stock Purchase plan.
